Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah sets the tone for his new project - Ancestral Recall - with this powerful statement. In his mission to unify cultural voices and tear down the sonic and social constructs that separate based on race, class, and culture, Adjuah asserts music has historically been disseminated to people with harmony and melody prioritized over rhythm. The value distinction leads to harmful hierarchal sentiments and perpetuates the view that cultures who prioritize harmony and melody are more nuanced and sophisticated than those who prioritize rhythm. It is an inaccurate portrayal.

Ancestral Recall looks to excavate and update hidden histories in sound by displaying a sonic tapestry that illuminates the har-melodic movements found within rhythm, rendering previous contexts baseless, Adjuah explains: "In its inception, Ancestral Recall was built as a map to de-colonialize sound; to challenge previously held misconceptions about some cultures of music; to codify a new folkloric tradition and begin the work of creating a national set of rhythms; rhythms rooted in the synergy between West African, First Nation, African Diaspora/Caribbean rhythms and their marriage to rhythmic templates found in trap music, alt-rock, and other modern forms. It is time we created a sound that dispels singular narratives of entire peoples and looks to finally represent the wealth of narratives found throughout the American experience. One that shows that all forms of expression in sound are valid, as all people are." The goal is to connect people in one understanding rather than dividing them by definition.

The music of Ancestral Recall focuses the mind. As the ear adjusts to the shifting tapestries of rhythm, Adjuah stands firm in the mix, heralding the histories of rhythm and song. Walking hand-in-hand with listeners through his and their musical histories, clearing the way for a new reading of what all musical futures can become. Ancestral Recall is an album that might easily be misunderstood in its own time, but will certainly be seen as a moment in history that marked a momentous shift in musical and perhaps social understanding.

Marcus Strickland's Twi-Life - People of the Sun (2018)

When last we heard from Strickland on 2016's Nihil Novi , he was experimenting with hip-hop-inspired production, blending genres with a little help from album producer Meshell Ndegeocello. In the process, something big happened: "I was no longer concerned about what is or isn't jazz," he says. "I got rid of those barriers and was like, 'Well, who the fuck am I?' That's when I started on this path."

On People of the Sun , Strickland blazes down that trail fully at the helm of his music—performing, writing, and producing with his outrageously able Twi-Life band on deck—even as he sonically and socially traces the African diaspora from present to past in an effort to unpack his identity. "I'm thinking about where we came from," says Strickland, "and how that clashes and goes hand in hand with what we've created here as Black Americans." The result is an album that's busy and beautiful, inventive and contemplative, an amalgam of influences from West Africa (griot culture, Afrobeat, percussion) and America (post-bop, funk-soul, beat music) performed in the key of revelation. Another facet that sets the album part is Strickland's lesser-known woodwind obsession with the bass clarinet, which adds its noirish hues to so many of these songs.

Growing up in Miami, Strickland always thought of music "in a very mixed up way." He heard Haitian sounds, Afro-Cuban rhythms, and southern rap in the streets, while at home his dad would jump from Stevie to Coltrane to P-Funk on his reel-to-reel deck. Meanwhile, his mom put Marcus and his twin brother E.J. into art school so they'd be surrounded by proper "music nerds." The talent they nurtured there on saxophone and drums (respectively) propelled the pair on to The New School at just the right time: college was basically one wild jam session with like minded upstarts like Robert Glasper, Keyon Harrold, and Bilal Oliver—guys who'd go on to remake jazz (and more) in their own post-modern musical image. To hear People of the Sun , that backdrop feels more like fate than chance.

Второй альбом саксофониста, продюсера и композитора из Лос-Анджелеса, который на данный момент является одним из тех, кто олицетворяет собой дух настоящего джаза и потому востребован и почитаем, в том числе и среди рэпперов, с которыми Kamasi Washington сотрудничает регулярно. В профильном направлении он часто участвует и побеждает на всевозможных джазовых фестивалях.

Kamasi перебрался с Brainfeeder'а на британский лэйбл Young Turks, тут среди инди-попа и электроники созрел его второй сольный релиз. Новый альбом концептуально поделён на две части "Earth" и "Heaven", что-то подобное было и на дебюте, но по сравнению с "Epic" (2015), который вышел на 3 CD, "Heaven And Earth" всё же покороче, тем не менее, это двойной альбом и это больше 2,5 часов джаза, современного и академичного. Кроме того, у этого "Heaven And Earth" тоже есть третья, бонусная часть, которая называется "The Choice", но она пока не доступна в интернет магазинах, только на физическом релизе.

Столько раз, начиная ещё с классики, мы слышали джаз в хип-хопе, а вот хип-хоп в джазе - это сравнительно молодое явление, такими изысками слушателей балуют, например, британские музыканты (вспомним хотя бы Alfa Mist). Дебютный альбоме молодой продюсерской группы из Лондона Blue Lab Beats стал ещё одним примером того, как можно вписать рифмы в джазовые аккорды, и с тем и с другим им помогли столь же талантливые приглашённые артисты. 

NK-OK и Mr DM стали дуэтом в 2016 году, уже в 2017-м был готов "Xover", который теперь обретает полноценный релиз. Яркий и одарённый проект, выделяющийся даже на фоне пёстрой сцены британского альтернатива. Out on March 30th, the album is led by new song 'Pineapple', although it's technically an interpolation of the song 'Yembele' by Samba Mapangala.

Второй сольный альбом трубача и продюсера Keyon Harrold, который имеет самое непосредственное отношение к группе The Vanguard. Все мы помним альбом D'Angelo "Black Messiah", за который певец получил Грэмми, так вот The Vanguard были продюсерами и тоже получили по граммофону. Кроме того Harrold входит в духовой коллектив Mo Horns. Свой первый альбом "Introducing Keyon Harrold" он выпустил в 2009 году. 

Будучи дипломированным джазменом, Keyon не стесняется того, что и кое-кто из деятелей хип-хопа оказал на него влияние. Уникальный проект Esperanza Spalding, альбом, который она с нуля написала и записала за 77 часов, разумеется, не без помощи своей команды, куда вошли не только музыканты. Альтернатива хип-хопа и джаза может стать только лучше, когда исполняется живым духовым оркестром, коим и является Renegade Brass Band из британского Шеффилда. Большая команда состоит из 8 духовых, 2 ударников, диджея и эмси. Надо ли говорить, что на своём альбоме "Totems" они выдают роскошный звук под стать виртуозным американским духовым группам вроде Hypnotic Brass Ensemble или Hot 8 Brass Band, ещё подбадривая его рифмами V3xation. Первый выход в свет большой электро-соул-джаз группы, в которую помимо самого Terrace Martin входят Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington и другие музыканты.

На что не обратил внимание только ленивый, так это то, что все три столпа The Pollyseeds имеют отношение к творчеству Kendrick Lamar, особенно это касается Martin'а и Washington'а, которые и территориально ближе к хип-хоп сенсации. Но на самом деле эта деталь может быть использована только для того, чтобы без надобности нарушить покой тех, кому музыка с "Sounds Of Crenshaw" может совсем и не подойти, потому что хип-хопом здесь и не пахнет. Ровный, мелодичный звук, скорее присущий актуальному творчеству техасца Glasper'а, озаглавленный как музыкальная тема района Лос-Анджелеса, и, судя по всему, это только начало.

New Orleans’ Grammy-nominated Hot 8 Brass Band release their fifth LP, ‘On The Spot’, on 31st March 2017 alongside an extensive tour of Europe, Australasia and North America including their biggest London headline yet at The Roundhouse.

An early buzz was kicked off by December 2016's “Working Together”/“Keepin’ It Funky” single and two accompanying videos, one of which featured Craig Charles leading Hot 8 and thousands of revellers in a jubilant New Orleans-style parade at Madness’ House Of Common event. This was just one of many highlights of 2016 – a huge year of touring and festivals which saw them reaching out to an ever increasing fanbase in the wake of their 20th Anniversary, and proving that wherever they are, Hot 8 bring the unique, undiluted energy of the Second Line parades.

The title of the new album refers to the glorious, rare moment in a New Orleans parade when the band stops to take a break but keeps noodling with their instruments for the crowd. Vibing, keeping the energy up, when they’re completely in the moment they sync up and the magic happens – a new tune is created: On The Spot. Buzzing with the spontaneous synchronicity which has fuelled their development from the streets of their hometown to the forefront of the global scene over two decades, their fifth LP sees Hot 8 committing this live sound and spirit to record like never before – note the exclamation captured on tape at end of the title track: “Did we just make that up?!”

‘On The Spot’ also points to the way Hot 8 have had to adapt, learn and live from moment to moment throughout their career, and their lives. A barely imaginable series of trials - the devastation of Hurricane Katrina, the separate deaths of five band members, and trumpeter Terrell “Burger” Batiste losing his legs in a car crash - have tested these men time and again. Their tragic yet life-affirming story has been featured in the Spike Lee documentaries When The Levees Broke and The Creek Don’t Rise, and David Simon’s HBO series Treme; recent interviews with Mary Anne Hobbs (6Music) and BBC World Service’s Outlook chimed especially intensely with listeners in the midst of the Black Lives Matter movement.

In true Hot 8 style, this album pairs hard-hitting, heart-on-sleeve sentiment with party-fuelling beats, hooks and grooves; raw funk and charismatic hip hop vocals mix with Big Easy jazz elegance. These 11tracks have helped the band get through their up and down moments; ‘On The Spot’ honours fallen friends and the city of New Orleans, and showcases new heights achieved after coming back from the deepest lows. “We still break down a lot,” says bandleader and tuba player Bennie Pete, “but now it’s tears of joy. We keep everything in our hearts, but we keep on.”

A serious message from the street is delivered via a buoyant beat on“Get It How You Live”,and the loop-the-loop form of“Bottom Of The Bucket” was inspired by trying to escape their trials and tribulations: “It’s like that story about crabs in a bucket”, says Pete. “One gets to the top and the others will bring him back down. We tried, but there was no one to help pull us out. So we had to do it on our own”. Percussion legend Alfred “Uganda” Roberts (a collaborator of Dr. John, Allen Toussaint and The Meters) graces the latter track, while the heartrendingly beautiful “St James Infirmary”, first learned in church, features the magic touch of Dr. Michael White, a prolific clarinettist from the traditional New Orleans culture.

The joyful “That Girl” taps a different part of their history: “We all love Stevie Wonder, and this is one of those tunes we’d heard coming out the boomboxes of our mamas”, says Pete. Further expanding their canon of inspired covers (which, of course, includes their legendary take on “Sexual Healing”), “Sweetest Taboo” brings a rugged take on the queen of smoothness, Sade; long-standing street tune “Annie Mae” was recorded in tribute to the inspirational Natalie Cole, and it appears here - as it does in Hot 8’s parade sets – back-to-back with the propulsive Frankie Beverly & Maze cover “Working Together”. The unshakable horn riffs of “Can’t Nobody Get Down”, and bubbling bass of “Keepin’ It Funky”,drop the listener right back in the centre of an electrifying Hot 8 party crowd.

Transcending genres and trends, Hot 8 have performed and collaborated with artists from Lauryn Hill to Mos Def, The Roots to the Blind Boys of Alabama. Playing at the world’s biggest festivals and constantly selling out headline dates, they are in heavy demand across the media, last year alone performing radio sessions including BBC 6Music Morning Show, BBC Radio 4’s Loose Ends, Jazz FM, BBC Radio Scotland and BBC R3. Honouring their city’s musical traditions while forging their own powerful legacy, Hot 8’s story is set to continue apace via the ‘On The Spot’ album and tour.

Braxton Cook - Somewhere in Between (2017)

"When I was 5, my Mom rented a saxophone for my Dad’s birthday. I remember sitting down and listening to him play Somewhere Over The Rainbow. The rest of my brothers had left the room, but I stayed, transfixed by the sound. Eventually he came over and asked if I wanted to try it myself – it was too big and heavy for me to hold, so he held it up for me. From that first note, I was hooked and knew
that I had to play the saxophone.

I grew up in the 90’s in the Maryland/DC area, my house was full of all kinds of music, I remember listening to so much good music in those early years, old Motown records, Parliament Funkadelic, Cameo, Bill Withers and old jazz records. The sound of the saxophone always stood out to me and I found myself wanting to recreate the sounds that I heard from the recordings. After numerous hours of practice and study I eventually got better and people began to take notice. Shortly thereafter, I began formal lessons with a private teacher and eventually starting performing locally in the Maryland/DC area. Since then my musical journey has taken me to some exotic and wonderful places, and I’ve had some amazing support from people I love and respect.

In 2011 I transferred from Georgetown University, where I’d been studying English, to The Juilliard School in NYC to study Jazz Saxophone. Juilliard is an amazing place, so much history, the walls lined with true legends, you can’t help but feel honored and slightly overwhelmed by the greats that had walked those halls years before. In my first year several events collided and led to the privileged position I am now in. A chance to meet with Grammy Award nominated Christian Scott at a Donald Harrison concert led to me being flown to LA 6 months later for a recording session and here I am nearly 4 years later, playing saxophone in his group.

In the years when I was touring around the world with Christian Scott, I managed to save up enough money to move out from my dorm rooms at Juilliard and got my own apartment in Harlem. Harlem is a very special place, full of history and culture. Harlem is a melting pot of old and new, you can walk down 125th Street past the African drum circles, the Apollo Theatre, and even a hip-hop cypher. The aroma of foreign countries fill the air, the vibe of the place is both exciting and inspiring. Creatively there is so much inspiration in Harlem, and I think it has probably been the biggest influence on my music now.

Although my time at Juilliard taught me so much, creatively and musically it was kind of rigid, the history and structure of the place felt constrictive. I feel as though the direction I’m heading in now is more honest to who I am and embraces all of my musical influences. Ultimately, I would be unfulfilled if I only played straight ahead jazz because I would be neglecting an entire other side of my development which is R&B and Soul music. I’m finally getting back to what it is I’ve always wanted to do, which is to sing and play the saxophone and that’s a very fun and exciting thing.

I feel lucky to have been given so many breaks and opportunities in my career so far, but this is just the start, the future is exciting and finally feel like I can breath and write music from the heart that means something to me, and hoping that it’ll mean something to someone else too."

Karriem Riggins is best known as a jazz drummer and hip- hop producer for artists like Common, Kanye West, The Roots, and Kaytranada, but he doesn’t categorize himself as anything but an artist.

“You don’t have to put yourself in a box...there’s so many different ways to go,” Riggins says. A student of late jazz bassist Ray Brown, he tours with another Brown protégé, Grammy Award winner Diana Krall. He spent much of 2016
at work on Common’s much-heralded Black America Again album, which included a performance at the White House as part of NPR’s “Tiny Desk” series. The son of late keyboardist Emmanuel Riggins, names of some of the jazz artists he’s backed reads like the genre’s hall of fame—Hank Jones, Oscar Peterson, Milt Jackson, Donald Byrd and Ron Carter.

For Headnod Suite, his second album on Stones Throw Records, Riggins expertly builds on his credentials with 29 tracks of pure hip-hop—each track deftly crafted with swing that only a drummer would know. Swing is the weapon. And there’s always a message, be it verbal or instrumental. “Headnod Suite is a concept of several rhythmic ideas fused together,” Riggins says. “I wanted to explore the power of interludes and marrying different styles and harmony together.”

On Headnod Suite, Common makes a reciprocal vocal appearance on “Yes Yes Y’all,” which gives way to literal grunts from James Brown and the 1-2 shot of “Trombone Love” and the 16-bit funk “Crystal Stairs.” If 2012’s Alone Together was right at the intersection of hip-hop and jazz, Riggins’ current path is less the jazz found in his family and career lineage, and more the hip-hop culture he found on his own.
