For Andy, rap is a noble form. He's a wordsmith extraordinaire, snappy and audacious, tipping his hat "to all the microphoners who still bring that dedication and expertise to their craft" and choosing to work with equally rapid sparring partners like Blabbermouf and MC Abdominal. Ownership of the genre is a constant theme throughout the LP. Like a contact sport, you punch and fight your way to the mic and once there "no one can take it from me". Reverance is constantly being paid to the dons that went before, overtly Rick Rubin & the Def Jam crew, but covertly the reggae sound systems and jazzers of old.
Not a sloppy note or shabby rhyme here.It's an album that pops and fizzes with quirky beats and funky rhythms from start to finish. With production lines neater and sharper than a pair of sta press trousers, it's impossible not to be seduced by the sheer bouyancy of the lyrics, beats and intention. A refreshingly entire body of work with no low points, only head-nodding highs. It's good to stumble across a hip hop album that has you giggling, thinking, singing and wearing out the soles of your shoes all at once.

Grand Analog - лайв банда из Торонто, состоящая из пяти человек, включая Odario Williams, который является продюсером и эмси-фронтменом группы. As a multi-instrumentalist, producer, emcee & music educator, THAVIUS BECK is a man whose life revolves around audio and technology. With a focus on bass heavy rhythms, dark emotional melodies and twisted sample manipulation, Thavius has not only released numerous solo albums (under his own name, plus previous moniker Adlib), but he's also collaborated with and remixed luminaries Saul Williams, Nine Inch Nails, The Mars Volta, Skylar Grey and Nas, to name a few.
A native of Minneapolis, THAVIUS BECK moved to Los Angeles at age 16 and quickly found a crew of like-minded beat makers & rappers who formed the underground hip-hop collective known as Global Phlowtations. As a main pillar of the nine man + one woman crew, he was responsible for producing, rhyming on and recording many of the songs that were released across three classic self-released GPAC albums in the late 90's. Thavius released solo projects through various labels over his 20-year stay in LA, collaborated with fellow producer/emcee Subtitle (aka Giovanni Marks) to create the group "Labwaste", and began touring extensively with Saul Williams as his 'one-man band', outfitted with an arsenal of state-of-the-art electronic gadgetry.
Eventually his love of music and technology lead to Ableton Live, where Thavius became a certified trainer of in 2009. He quickly became a world-renowned advocate for Ableton Live education, and took a brief hiatus from releasing albums to run electronic music workshops and explore teaching. In 2016, he left the cozy confines of Los Angeles and relocated to Brooklyn, NY. Reinvigorated by the city, plus inspired by frequent European tours with Saul, both offered Thavius meditative hours spent in solitary at hotels, airports & on trains writing new material.
The result is an impassioned new self-produced project "TECHNOL O.G." [HNR74], that finds Thavius expressing his true self as an artist & man. His much-anticipated twelve song album is a record full of raw & unfiltered truth revealed through his rhythmic vocal reflections and electronic production perfection. Evidence has returned to deliver his third solo album, Weather or Not, the final chapter in The Weatherman series before beginning the next saga. “As a writer and a rapper, I’ve been using the weather as a metaphor my whole career,” Evidence explains. “On the Dilated Peoples song “Guaranteed”, I had a line that said, ‘Some think I’m clever, others think I’m the one who makes too many references to weather… or not.’ Every time I would perform that song live, the crowd would always say the ‘or not’, so I knew I was on to something, and it would eventually be an album title.”
For Weather or Not, Evidence tapped a stellar cast of producers to share duties with, including Alchemist, DJ Premier, Nottz, DJ Babu, Twiz The Beat Pro, Sam I Yam and Budgie. The album also features an all-star lineup of guests and friends, including Slug (Atmosphere), Rakaa (Dilated Peoples), Alchemist, Styles P, Rapsody, Jonwayne, Defari, Krondon, Khrysis, Mach Hommy and Catero.
“I made this album with loyalists in mind,” Evidence says. “There’s nothing that’s unintentional. There are no wasted words.” While the album predominantly highlights his talent as a rapper, Evidence is also a well known producer, photographer and videographer. But, for all of his non-stop, high-level productivity, Evidence is most notably modest, a quality fully captured on Weather Or Not.
“Now that the album is finished, I can see clearly that every single song serves its own purpose. To me, it’s like a playlist, or a greatest hits collection…except that none of these songs existed before I made them.”

Planet Asia helped jump-start the West Coast independent hip-hop movement, and has solidified himself as one of the most consistent and respected MCs in the game over his 20+ year career. He dropped his debut EP with producer Fanatik in 1998, and followed up quickly with the singles "Definition of Ill" (Stones Throw) and "Place of Birth" (ABB Records). In 2001, The Source Magazine gave him the 'First Round Draft Pick' and 'Independent Album of the Year' awards for 'How the West Was One', which was recorded with fellow CA rapper Rasco under the group name Cali Agents. This landed him a deal with Interscope Records, where he was signed until 2003 without releasing an album.
Planet Asia was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2002 for his feature on the song "W" by Mystic, and was later signed to Avatar Records, which released his official debut album, 'The Grand Opening,' in 2004. It earned him another 'Independent Album of the Year' award from The Source. Later, he started his own imprint Gold Chain Music, on which he has churned out multiple projects. He has also collaborated on albums with the likes of DJ Muggs ('Pain Language'), Evidence ('The Medicine') and Madlib ('Cracks In The Vinyl'), among others, and released songs with artists such as Linkin Park, Bun B, Talib Kweli and Ghostface Killah.
The Fresno MC is fresh off of a strong 2017 which featured well-received collaborative albums with producers DirtyDiggs ('Dirty Planet') and Apollo Brown ('Anchovies'). For 2018, Asia teamed up with Bay Area producer izznyce for this true solo project, sure to be considered the next classic in his vast catalog.
'The Golden Buddha' was produced entirely by izznyce (producer for Superstar Quamallah and more) and features AZ, Hus Kingpin, Turbin, Marvelous Mag, Killa Kali, TriState, Xiomara and The Architect.
Speaking on the project, Planet Asia says: "This album represents the foundation of what Planet Asia is about and that is 'balance'. Me and izznyce also took our time with the record, and had a chance to really vibe out and make the type of music we personally like that will stand the test of time!"

У меня ещё есть несколько неплохих прошлогодних релизов, которыми я поделюсь с вами позже, а тут подзадержавшийся итог года, мой выбор 50 лучших альбомов из тех, что вы могли послушать с помощью MakKEYDay.
В добавок к неприятностям, о которых я рассказал в первой итоговой статье, прибавилось ещё и то, что 2017 год получился очень ровным по альбомам, было много средних и хороших релизов, что здорово осложнило мне выбор, собрать этот полтинник было, может быть, даже сложнее, чем когда-либо в прошлом. Обычно из расширенного списка у меня в итоговый топ не попадают 10-15 альбомов, в этот раз в блокноте осталось почти 30.
Ещё это был год сольников, тут 30 сольных релизов, в десятке лучших их 7. Продолжается гегемония Mello Music Group, 5-й год подряд это лучший хип-хоп лэйбл у нас, 7 из его релизов попали в полтинник.
