During her 12 year career she has earned the respect and admiration of listeners and peers alike via her incredible talent not only as a vocalist and songwriter spanning jazz, soul and hip-hop, but her long standing role as a producer and musician.
“You’re my Jay Electronica… you take it there,” declares Ali Shaheed Muhammad of A Tribe Called Quest. He is one of a long list of admirers including Mos Def (“She’s incredible. She’s like [Roberta] Flack, Nina Simone, Ella Fitzgerald, she’s something else.”), Erykah Badu, Dev Hynes aka Blood Orange (“She is one of my favourite musicians in the world”), Bilal and Robert Glasper who invited Georgia to perform on his “Miles Ahead” OST in 2016.
“Music is my discipline. It’s my way of meditating, it’s my way of thanking God, it’s my way of communicating… It’s my way of life,” Georgia explains. Typically working alone, her new album flips that dynamic and takes Georgia out of her comfort zone for the first time since “Seeds” (2003) which was entirely produced by Madlib. “Overload” bears the fruits of numerous collaborations, most notably with duo Mike & Keys (50 Cent, Nipsey Hussle, Snoop Dogg, G-Eazy) who contribute production to four tracks including the sleek, anthemic title track - Pitchfork ‘Best New Track’ on 25 June 2018 - alongside Khalil (Dr Dre).
“Overload [the album] is an experiment in restraint,” she explains. I pack myself into something as clear as possible with the help of gifted artists from all over the world. The live show is an experiment in interpretation. That's when [my band] The Righteous and I unpack into a joyful noise. Both of these dynamics have been striving to balance themselves within me since birth… since wanting to record anything. And by the grace of Patience, Discipline and Devotion, a sweet spot has started to appear.”
Elsewhere Dutchman Moods and Manila’s Lustbass bring the slo-mo funk heat on ‘Aerosol’ and ‘Vital Transformation’ respectively, and Shana Jenson (Muldrow) and Georgia’s partner Dudley Perkins crop up on ‘You Can Always Count On Me’ (a cover of the Gap Band classic) and ‘These Are The Things I Like About You’. Flying Lotus, Aloe Blacc and Dudley Perkins share Executive Production credits on the album.
Themes of Love, Spirituality, Self-Actualisation are woven into Georgia’s music, but she also does not shy away from politics and has been loudly and vigorously critical of the persistent state of inequality between Black and White in the US. Nowhere more directly than on ‘Blam’ - a song about self-defence. “I believe that it has the bones of spiritual song,” says Georgia. “It’s an updated negro spiritual in aesthetic”.
Georgia was 17 when she began making beats in earnest, but first lit up the scene with her debut album “Olesi: Fragments Of An Earth” in 2006. It was at this time that Georgia met, befriended and collaborated with the likes of Madlib, Oh No, MED (fka Medaphoar), Wildchild, DJ Romes and her future partner Dudley Perkins aka Declaime. She co-founded the SomeOthaShip Connect record label with Dudley in 2008, the platform and springboard for many of her musical travels that have expanded and extended down myriad pathways. Georgia has collected many names over the years: Ms. One, Pattie Blingh & The Akebulan 5, an electro fusion collaboration with DJ Romes called Blackhouse and astral jazz outings as Jyoti - a Hindu name given to Georgia by her Aunt Radha’s friend Alice Coltrane (they attended the same ashram) and serendipitously Great Aunt to one Steven Ellison aka Flying Lotus. “She showed me so much love as a child. She knew I was going to work with synthesisers before I did,” laughs Georgia.
It is fitting that a decade on in 2018, Georgia should sign to Brainfeeder - a record label deeply embedded in LA, with a ton of shared history, shared beliefs and a united vision of the future - to release her stunning new album “Overload”.

E began singing at a very young age, rapping in 7th grade, performing with a cover band at 17, and then hitting the open mic circuit at the age of 19. Young World was created during a tumultuous stretch in E-Turn’s life, marked by the highs of touring Europe and the lows of loss.
Drawing influence everywhere from Mos Def to Stevie Nicks, E’s writing conveys urgency, mindfulness, and resilience in the face of pain. Her gritty, impassioned delivery fits seamlessly into the bold production aesthetics of Swamburger, with the two artists displaying the type of rarified chemistry that can only come from frequent collaboration. “Walking through your inner hell / Chipping at your outer shell”, E-Turn sings on “Stumble”, channeling ‘90s R&B over a woozy, shuffling Swam beat. Homeboy Sandman’s Kindness for Weakness was one of the strongest releases by an MC with no shortage of must-hear albums and EPs this past decade. And it wasn’t just because his sardonic, sharp-toothed but clear-eyed conceptual raps were on point—he brought an all-world lineup of beatmakers with him.
Yet of all the guests from that 2016 record, from Large Professor to RJD2 to Paul White, it was the most unassuming producer who has carried over into a more in-depth teamup with Sandman. Edan, the underground producer/MC who blew up in 2005 off his psychedelic hip-hop masterpiece Beauty and the Beat, before his release schedule went sporadic at best over the following 10 years, unexpectedly re-emerged behind the boards on Kindness for Weakness highlight “Talkin’ (Bleep).” And two years later, that collaborative spirit has spawned seven more cuts, the professed end result of Edan’s renewed inspiration coming from a mutual respect with Sandman.
If it takes an exceptional chemistry with another artist for Edan to step back into the production forefront, then Humble Pi justifies that idea: aside from Edan’s own often-intense “Pete Nice goes through the stargate from 2001” delivery, few MCs click on the cosmic level of Edan’s beats quite like Sandman does. There’s a certain rejection of the new for newness’s sake on Humble Pi—sometimes literally, as on the album-ending twofer of hilarious anti-social media boom-bap diatribe “#NeverUseTheInternetAgain” (“Everyday the bullshit worsen / Order a pizza like a fucking person”) and caveman anthem “Evolution of (sand)Man,” that finally one-ups the Jimmy Castor Bunch for hip-hop heads going way back.
And the here-and-now still sounds eternal: Sandman’s unpredictable but understandable flow sounds revelatory in Edan’s lysergic landscapes, whether it’s Vivaldi as acid-soul cratedigger on the chronicling of city-trapped death in “Grim Seasons,” or the agitating percussion of “Unwavering Mind” reverbed into the sound of shivering aluminum. It’s a short but vivid worldbuilding record, the remnants of old places and past lives still standing in defiance of hyperdevelopment.

Growing up in a dysfunctional home in Minneapolis, there were two things Joshua Turner turned to for comfort when his parents fought: the records he’d listen to on a loop to drown out their conflict and the atlas he’d pore over to pretend he was anywhere else. Turner’s all grown up now, but his sources of childhood refuge continue to play an integral role in his life. In his spare time he draws maps for fun, and, under the name deM atlaS, he’s composing his emotionally complex hip-hop records aimed at listeners who are in need of some sonic solace of their own.
His new album, Bad Actress, represents the culmination of a twisting creative path that Turner’s patiently been following since his teens. He was a poet, a painter, and the frontman for a rock band before he found his space in Minneapolis’s prolific rap scene. The title, Bad Actress, comes from Turner’s inability to hide his true feelings, and he’s packed the album with unguarded emotions centered around a lifetime of unhealthy relationships, struggles with mental illness, and an indomitable drive to overcome them. Musically, the album draws from every stage of Turner’s young career, from the high school rock singer to the scruffy DIY-er who self-recorded his Charle Brwn EP while figuring out the basics of Garageband, to the confident and versatile vocalist he is today, equally at home crooning and screaming as he is rapping over beats by heavy hitters like Ant and MF DOOM.
From the grime-caked beats to the confessional lyrics to the supercharged guitars laced throughout, Bad Actress is deeply rooted in Minneapolis’ singular hip-hop scene, where boom-bap never went out of style and raw honesty still beats flashy materialism. Turner’s soulful singing voice, and his ability to navigate from the acidic Sly Stone funk of “Gratitude” to the acoustic balladry of “Music Man” to the purple-tinged minimalist gospel of “Runnin Back” make it clear that he’s one of the young talents who’s going to author the next chapter in the city’s storied musical history. After all, an atlas isn’t only a collection of maps, but a man who’s strong enough to carry the weight of the whole world on his shoulders.

At the helm of Big Bad Death's production, The Heavy Twelves include a wide array of synthesized sounds and prominent percussion with intricately recorded drum patterns. They obsess over pushing and pulling, and turning and tuning knobs until each and every sound conforms to the aesthetic. The music is full of heavy synth bass, catchy melodies, and interesting noise, but always sounds like a train that could run off the tracks at any second...and in certain ways, it always does.

KAOS is a 10-song score made to soundtrack an upcoming feature film coming in Spring 2019. The film follows two childhood friends, Muggs and Roc Marci, who were brought up in different areas of New York: Hempstead, Long Island and Flushing, Queens. After a significant amount of time spent apart, they are reunited after Muggs serves out a 10-year prison bid. With hopes to rule the streets once again, the trio act out in ‘kaos’ towards anyone who tries to get in their way.

Lando Chill makes music which is classified as hip-hop, but isn't tethered to a single genre, encompassing elements of funk, gospel, jazz, indie rock, psychedelic, and folk. Lance Washington was born and raised in Chicago, but moved to Arizona to attend college. His debut full-length For Mark, Your Son arrived on Mello Music Group in 2016. The album was an intense self-examination inspired by the loss of the rapper's father, who died of a heart attack when Washington was four years old. Lando Chill's second album, The Boy Who Spoke to the Wind, appeared in 2017 and was named #26 on Bandcamp Daily's 100 Best Albums of the Year. The album was influenced by Paulo Coelho's book The Alchemist, and contained a more abstract, experimental sound than his prior releases. Since 2016, Lando Chill has teamed with multi-instrumentalist and producer The Lasso, resulting in a singular sound only possible through a true symbiosis of vocalist and producer. Once again, the duo has taken a leap forward with Lando Chill’s upcoming release, Black Ego; a collection of songs that is equal parts west coast funk and desert trip-hop, threaded together by Lando's bold vision. Black Ego is slated for an October 12th release on Mello Music Group.
