"The prerequisite to a genuine optimism is understanding. An understanding of one's past, one's present, as well as one's trajectory. Without such an understanding, the resultant optimism is instead a sloppy veneer, hardly capable of convincing onlookers of its own hope and driving force.
On 'Open Your Optics to Optimism,' LA's Blu and producer Fa†e buckle into a DeLorean, cruising back to a time before time in order that they might gain the knowledge necessary to exude such a genuine optimism. Blu outlines Earth's history and then dives within it, beginning from the abyssal plane of the ocean floor, to the stunning sights of the outer atmosphere, and finally beyond, culminating in a personal transcendence outside both space and time.
Of course, there are snags along the way, indicated by the worried/chilling vocals of Cehryl on "Higher," as we ascend ever further from Earth's surface. But Blu's calm and creative delivery, as well as experimentally-rooted lyricism act as the perfect guide across Fa†e's rhythmically cohesive and booming production.

Slaine is no stranger to success. The Boston-native has had movie roles alongside A-list stars such as Ben Affleck, Brad Pitt, Ray Liotta, Harvey Keitel and most recently Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson and Kevin Hart. He's made records with Hip Hop legends DJ Premier, Cypress Hill, Action Bronson, Snoop Dogg, Statik Selektah, Raekwon and U-God of Wu-Tang and was a founding member of the super-group La Coka Nostra with Everlast, DJ Lethal, Danny Boy of House of Pain, and Ill Bill of Non-Phixion. Slaine has landed four albums in the top 20 on Billboard's hip hop chart since 2009 both as a solo artist and with La Coka Nostra and has appeared in nine films in the same time span. He's achieved heights that most only dream of, not only in Hip Hop but also in Hollywood.
As an emcee, Slaine is known for his ability to tell dark stories and take listeners into a world of drugs, violence, love, loss, pain, dreams and nightmares. He has drawn from that same well to bring authenticity to some of best crime dramas of this generation. Slaine fast became a blue-collar hometown hero and was stepping off movie sets, tearing down sold out live shows, and working in studios until the sun came up. But part of what made his storytelling and performances so realistic was that they were inspired by his own reality and created from the center of a drug epidemic that he was fast becoming a casualty of. As his success grew, the same things that served him so well creatively were destroying his personal life and quite literally killing him. Financial ruin, emergency room visits and public blow-ups began to overshadow the talents that had given him such a promising career and the walls were closing in all around him. On March 2nd, 2014, at the end of an ugly bender, Slaine decided that enough was enough and on the 3rd day of March he started his journey in sobriety. He has not had a drink or a drug since.
His personal life slowly, but surely, started to regain traction when he stopped drinking and using drugs, but there were still doubts as to whether or not a return to form creatively would follow. And though he did release The King of Everything Else at a time when he was already six months sober, the album was a drug-fueled rampage which was already recorded during the end of his using. Early sobriety studio sessions with producer The Arcitype would end abruptly, as discomfort set in and writer's block was an issue for Slaine for the first time in his career. The following two-years would be a daily exercise in regaining confidence and finding his way back through a livelihood that was littered with trap doors and vivid memories of the habits that led to his demise. The result of his daily practices rendered a series of projects, the first of which comes early this fall.
On September 23rd Slaine returns with a brand new, eight track EP, Slaine Is Dead via AR Classic Records. It focuses not on his success, but more so walking out of his darkest hours and confronting his failures. In a career marked by dark lyricism and introspection this project is both, but also finds Slaine exploring hope, faith and courage. He never abandons his roots, but gives us a new perspective on old themes. He vividly depicts the life of a drug dealer on "Pusher", shares his drive since childhood to make his mark on "Legendary" and ultimately finds salvation on "Coming Home". He calls on long time friends and collaborators, Vinnie Paz, ILL BILL, Termanology, Statik Selektah, DJ Eclipse, and Demrick and Rite Hook for support on the record, and adds an unlikely collaboration with vocalist, Jared Evan. With the help of fellow executive producer and beat-smith, The Arcitype, who handles the bulk of the production, Slaine Is Dead has achieved a sound that is gritty, polished, and moving; and Despite the EP's title, this project marks a true and definitive rebirth for Slaine.

Volume Three highlights German producer Wun Two, whose inspiration and process is best described in his own words:
“I used to listen to all kinds of music when I was a small child. As a teenager I decided to try to make my own music, but I never had the intention of making it available to the public. Maybe five or six years ago a good friend told me to put some stuff on a Soundcloud page, and everything else took its course.
When it comes to making beats, I tend to follow the same scheme…I listen to a lot of music and if I find something that I’m feeling I try to make something with it. I’ll program an easy drum pattern and chop the sample or a whole loop to it and add a bass line. I try to make simple instrumentals; because I don’t play the instruments myself, but rather create something that I would call a ‘collage’.
I grew up and studied in a small quiet village surrounded by forests. In this context I would say my music, this “collage”, sounds calm and very much inspired by nature. I just do what I feel; the compositions always mimic this inspiration.”

The list of influential American and Japanese jazz-fusion giants is not easily condensed into one short description, but for the sake of explaining the roots of Pink Lemonade, an abridged version of how we arrived at this point in jazz/hip-hop history is necessary.
In the 1960s, fusion was essentially born when jazz artists began experimenting with amplified sound, electronic effects, and synthesizers. Through the late 1970s, Jazz-fusion was a new and uncertain time in jazz's existence. Artists like Bob James (in America) and Ryuichi Sakamoto (in Japan) permeated the mainstream and found widespread commercial success, landing themes for TV shows, movies, and commercials; while other artists created cult classics that continued to push the genre forward, reaching new heights of artistry and experimentalism. The distinct texture of jazz-fusion records are undeniable: warm, soft, melodic, analogue.
Japanese artists like Sadao Watanabe, The Square, and Casiopea brought relaxing, almost tropical vibes to the jazz-fusion repertoire. Electric pianos, upbeat rhythmic drums and percussion, calyptic flute rips, and sounds of the ocean. Pink Lemonade was inspired by all of these things. A futuristic headnod, to some of the funkiest, coolest, and most melodic humans to walk the Earth.
As hip-hop continues to grow and mutate, it's important and fascinating study our stylistic predecessors and remember the musicians who paved the way for the evolution of jazz.
