Drawing upon production assistance from young British producer, Fred, together with musical heavyweights Four Tet, Adrian Sherwood and Switch's new production team, With You, the title of the record is, in the man's own words, an "egocentric jest of daring to do things in the tradition of Jesus: I'm ready to bleed for the artform." It is, of course, also a reference to the way in which genres, in the sonic world of Roots Manuva, have a tendency to bleed into one another, so that hip hop, reggae, techno, funk, neo-classical, all blend together to create "liquid soul, the blood, the bleeds that paint infinite sacred wonders in our dreams and unfold in our day-to-day."

One of the true pioneers and originals of British music, any album from Roots Manuva is an event. When it's as good as Bleeds it's one of the musical events of the year. Both genre-defying and deeply rooted in what he describes as "the culture of Bass and Verb," the record innovates and consolidates in equal measure. Rodney Smith describes himself as "a British Black musical Mark Rothko" and Bleeds is another masterpiece from this abstract wordsmith.

Description:

Bionic Jazz is a freeform hip hop album with a concentration on an unorthodox, somewhat experimental, but wholly organic feel. It's reminiscent of when jazz musicians would just pick up their instruments and play freely without worrying about the confines of what was the expected norm. Временно закончив с кинематографическими экспериментами (не подумайте, что он перестал сниматься в эпизодах) RZA вернулся к музыкальным. Почему не записать альбом с музыкантом из инди-рок группы, тем более тот не прочь? - Видимо, не найдя пару напрашивающихся ответов на этот вопрос, RZA так и сделал. После синглов, мне не понятно, как это может оправдать себя, разве что сорвав несколько восторгов критиков, не слишком обременённых духом хип-хопа. Но будем надеяться, что Paul Banks из Interpol действительно хороший музыкант, и только RZA будет звучать неуместно на этом альбоме, а может быть даже не всегда.

Banks & Steelz, a musical collaboration between Wu Tang Clan's RZA and Interpol's Paul Banks, have announced that their upcoming debut album will be titled "Anything But Words" and will be released on August 26th. It features special guest appearances by Florence Welch of Florence + The Machine, Kool Keith and Wu Tang Clan's Ghostface Killah, Method Man and Masta Killa.

RZA and Banks first began working on music together in 2013. RZA told Rolling Stone at the time that the idea to collaborate with the Interpol frontman sparked after RZA's manager asked him who he wanted to do an album with.

"When I met Paul, I recognized the New York energy he has as a music artist," RZA says. "We got to know each other playing chess and vibing out in the studio. Our talents connected in a unique way and we started writing songs. The outcome was something distinctively different from my previous work, yet with another layer of cool."

К дебютному альбому "Look What This World Did to Us" в 2015 году рэппер добавил ещё и пару EP, а в 2016-м работа над очередным альбомом группы не помешала ему подготовить и собственный релиз, с которым ему очень помог читающий продюсер Ill Poetic, ранее работавший с Blueprint, Illogic, Blitz The Ambassador и др. Обложкой альбома послужило фото бабушки Red Pill, которую звали Mabel.

Consider yourself lucky if you can’t empathize with Red Pill. No one
channels bleakness better than the blue-collar Michigan MC, whose
sophomore solo LP for Mello Music Group, "Instinctive Drowning" plays out like the ghost of Bukowski on a snarling bender. His songs are lifelines for the doomed, death letters written for fatigued skeptics,
the anthems of an existence precariously balanced among a fifth of gin and a loaded .38 revolver aimed at the temple.

The album title doesn’t come from some glib “sad boy” gimmick—it’s an allusion to his unstinting depression and chronic alcoholism. The
saddest stories are usually the most honest and almost no one is more honest than Red Pill. His music is his own atheist confession booth. "Instinctive Drowning" unravels as a litany of fear and loathing:
rooted in the worry that his afflictions are genetic. Many others in his close family have suffered their own battles as well. Pill’s own mother passed at 45 from alcohol-related issues. If he ends up next, the album might as well serve as his requiem.

There is “The New Normal,” which chronicles his bout with viral
meningitis, a disease practically alien to those in their late 20s,
save for those whose livers are already ravaged. After two weeks of
vomiting and vows to quit drinking, Pill finally recovered and went to
the liquor store. “Club Privilege” is a club song for people who would
sooner kill themselves than go to the club. It doubles as examination
of white privilege, where Pill acknowledges the absurdity of his
self-pity, while starting brawls and screaming at bouncers.

There is “Fuck Your Ambition.” It is what it sounds like: a rejection
of white-picket fence ideals that never really existed. It lampoons
the Horatio Alger myths, the lies about self-sufficiency and the way
Capitalism has created a slovenly class of consumers. It could come
off as self-righteous, but Red Pill is never above the fray. He’s the
condemned marching alongside us, suffering for our sins, chewing on
stale pizza crust.

Virtuosic Ohio native, Ill Poetic, handled production. The co-owner of
San Diego’s Beat Box Records ceaselessly trawled his own bins,
sampling forgotten art-punk 45s to foreign psych-funk. From there, he
enlisted his Ohio band and a a wide range of musicians and
singers to add their seasoning. The music is equally comforting and
unsettling, eerie and familiar, offering the ideal contrast with
Pill’s lyrics—creating something with soulful depth but raw grit.

Of course, there is a paradox at the heart of this record. For an
album that courts death so closely, it manages to be oddly
life-affirming. Maybe Pill is an optimist after all. There is the
still the slight hope that he can escape, the notion that by writing
these songs he can somehow heal himself and help others. He still
probably will drown, but for now, few can float this well.

Довольно неожиданно, на мой взгляд, первым после паузы релизом CCR стал альбом австралийской мульти-инструменталистки, композитора и певицы Anna Morley, которая не сказать, что близка к хип-хопу. Anna живёт в Берлине, "Treasure Pleasure" стал её четвёртым альбомом с 2009 года, здесь она играет на вибрафоне, клавишных, скрипке, укулеле и перкуссии.
