Lifted Crews sound is mature and oh-so perfectly balanced in terms of how much grime in the verbal fire spat by emcees Mr. AT and Lex Doe, to how much big band reminiscent back bone in the horn section. Its a whirlwind of genre-bending music free of ageism, everyone gets a taste of what they like which will lead the most genre entrapped music listener into mad genre exploration.
Theres jazz of the smooth persuasion that harkens to some dark elegant club, mixed with the youthful vibrancy of hip-hop as modern poetry, a little gospel, a little rock and roll, a little Motown and traces of others. Lifted Crew is essentially a smorgasbord of highly skilled musicianship, every member absolutely dominates their role on the stage but does so in a way that each members sound weaves together in equal thickness. Everyone steps into the spotlight, rocks out, then steps right back into the sonic collective and owns their position.
The shining diva, Yvette Rovira, is a skilled practitioner of that balancing act. While she wields sick amounts of star power with her intoxicating stage presence and monstrous vocal range, on tracks like Times A Wastin and This is Hip Hop she pulls back and punctuates with dominating hooks, the accessories to the big band sound. Then came Danger, a song on which her range and vocal capabilities are put on chill-inducing display, literally, chill inducing.
This is Hip-Hop, a bass-y presence is certainly a must for any hip-hop anthem, and on this one Bens bass line owned that title. As an anthem, the song toyed with the very definition of hip-hop with the gospel crooner and rock/jazz guitar player Nicky Cake on the hook, this is hip-hop baby. As sung by Nicky, the hook becomes a redefinition of the nearly forty-year-old genre.
Lifted Crew and BTS are the best new bands in hip-hop. Stop sleeping.

June 19th, 2012 will mark the TRES Records release date for Let It Go – the debut LP from Detroit native House Shoes.
It feels wrong, though, to call this a 'debut' record because it doesn't sound like a first-try. Official debut, or not, House Shoes is not new. He released the now treasure-hunted Jay Dee Unreleased EP (1996), and Phat Kat's classic Dedication to the Suckers (1999) on his own imprint. He's produced for the late Big Proof (D12), J Dilla, Elzhi, and Danny Brown. He's DJ'ed for Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, Mayer Hawthorne, Slum Village, and too many more to list.
Technically, however, this is his debut LP. One that hip-hop 'know-somethings' have been asking for (for years). One he's probably been holding on to for a while. One he's finally letting go.
Let It Go, features two discs. The first is a full-length album boasting features by the 'heavyweights' and the 'hungry' alike; balanced between artists accustomed to hip-hop limelight, and those still chasing it.
The project bats with a heavy-handed Motown roster. Detroit-bred collaborators include Big Tone, Moe Dirdee, Black Milk, Guilty Simpson, and Danny Brown, among others. Los Angeles (Oh No, MED, The Alchemist, Co$$), Norfolk (Nottz), St. Louis (Black Spade), New York (Roc Marciano), and Chicago (Chali 2na, of Jurassic 5) pinch-hit throughout the project.
The second disc houses the instrumental versions from the record. It showcases the claps, snares, kicks, and soul-filled samples that House Shoes plates for Let It Go (and that might be overlooked next to the features, otherwise).
Songs like 'Dirt feat. Greneberg' (Oh No, Alchemist, Roc Marciano) and 'Everything (Modern Family) feat. Fatt Father' are tough to picture on the same project if listened to separately. In the context of Let It Go, however, they feel blood related and well placed.
Shoes delivers an album that sound like an album (and not a mixtape) – no small feat in the topography of today's music. He blends the songs, instrumentals, and interludes into a sequence that sounds like they all belong to something bigger than their time stamp and signature. Individually, the songs are strong; soaked in that neck-snapping, gritty-drummed, trouble-water-soulsampled thing that makes hip hop magnetic. To dissect the album into its parts would miss the point, though.
The triumph of Let It Go is the full hour of music, not any fraction of the 60-some-minute run time.

Beats For Brothels, Vol. 2 is an enigma of sorts. A unique structure comprised heavily of instrumentals and decorated with the Ghastly Duo's vocals interspersed throughout the project. Breaking the mold of the first in the series, Volume 2 is designed for an authentic listening experience as the structure dictates intended feelings and emotions crafted by The Groggy Pack.

West Coast golden child Del the Funky Homosapien teamed with rugged New Jersey underground producers Parallel Thought once before for Parallel Uni-Verses, his 2009 collaboration with Artifacts member Tame One. That album's casual vibe and nostalgic look back to hip-hop's golden days was forgettably fun and sounded like a miniature block party, due in large part to Parallel Thought's brightly celebratory beats. Reconvening for Attractive Sin, the East Cost/West Coast power team creates something a little more substantial than what came before, with Del in nonstop flow mode for most of the record and production that glides between booming, raw, and even subtly psychedelic. Swinging album opener "On Momma's House" finds gorgeous disco horn and string samples floating over an enormous beat as Del spits rhymes with a nearly freestyle feel, never pausing for a chorus or to take a breath. The Parallel Thought crew brings a wide variety of inspired beats to the album, from the fragmented soul-jazz samples of "Get to Drillin'" to the dark funk groove of "Ownership," even eventually getting into some mellow scratchy loops and stony vibes that hark back to the early-'90s Hieroglyphics material that Del himself pioneered. Del's free-form rhymes zigzag through different styles on almost every song, often hilariously and venomously shutting down the competition or fake MCs. The brutal beat of "Charlie Brown" is among the best examples of this, with thundering drums and wobbly horn samples backing up lines like "You don't hear me though/My voice sound like Charlie Brown's teacher (wampwahmpwamphwamp)/Can't reach your brain through the reefer" and "Every rhyme you ever puked was conducted by yours truly." The song, like much of the album, is relentless to the point of hypnotic, showing both collaborative parties on fire and at peak control of their talents. When Attractive Sin slows down to take a breath, it sacrifices none of its power or authority, as with the vibrating bassline and eerie ambience of the midtempo "Show's Over." The pairing of Parallel Thought's grimy East Coast sound and Del's outer-limits rhyme styles ultimately results in something bigger than the sum of its parts, and off either party's most well-worn paths. Attractive Sin finds the collaborators stretching out liberally and sounding genuinely excited and inspired by each other.

Преимущественно инструментальный "Hipology", хоть и призван нести знамя хип-хопа времён классических сэмплов, всё же имеет устойчивый привкус фьюжена и даунтемпо, что снова отсылает нас к творчеству Marc Mac в 4hero. Начиная с весны альбом издается во всех мыслимых форматах, в CD и WEB версиях имеет бонусный микс из треков альбома (я, правда, не очень понимаю, зачем он нужен).
London-based DJ and producer Marc Mac got his start as half of a duo called 4Hero; after a decade of producing beat-based electronic music, he now records under the name Visioneers and seems to be getting increasingly interested in vintage hip-hop, soul, and jazz, though his passion for breakbeats and turntable manipulation remains. On Hipology, he indulges all of his various musical interests with generally pleasing results -- though the frequent digressions into hip-hop history lessons (via spoken word reminiscences from central figures in the music's early development) and the sometimes surprisingly smooth surfaces of the jazzier numbers (like "Rocket Man [Afrolatin Joint]" and the horn-rich but ultimately tedious "Funky Fanfare") sometimes undermine the impact of the powerful grooves that are generated elsewhere (as on the nicely sentimental "Back in Time," which features Baron and TRAC, and the excellent "Shine"). But there are moments when those two tendencies converge beautifully and offer an intriguing glimpse at what this album could have sounded like if the fusion were more consistently maintained: the best example of this success is the brilliant "Oil & Water," a slice of smooth and jazzy hip-hop featuring excellent tag-team rapping from Notes to Self. More of this kind of thing, with fewer generic hip-hop samples and many fewer shout-outs to Marc Mac himself, would have quickly tipped this album from "good" to "excellent."

Amiri is back on the scene with an all new album entitled Vinyl Ritchie. Named after the fan favorite song "Vinyl Ritchie (2006)" off his last album, The Recipe, Amiri's sophomore effort brings back the soulful boom-bap production that real Hip- Hop heads crave. Featuring the street single "I Do It" and lead single "A Dreamer", the new album also reunites Amiri with partner in rhyme Spectac for "Take Our Time".

The Bravest Man In The Universe is Bobby Womack's first album of original material since 1994's Resurrection. Co-produced by Damon Albarn (Gorillaz, Blur) and Richard Russell, the album was recorded at Albarn's 'Studio 13' in West London and New York's Manhattan Center between October and December 2011. The album features guest vocalist Lana Del Rey on the song, "Dayglo Reflection". Bobby Womack's musical career has spanned 50+ years during which time he has written songs recorded by The Rolling Stones, Wilson Pickett, Janis Joplin (to name a few) and has played on sessions for Pickett, Aretha Franklin, Ray Charles, Dusty Springfield and more. Nicknamed "The Preacher" and "The Poet", Bobby Womack's work has topped the singles charts many times over and his collaborations with artists from Patti Labelle to Mos Def to Gorillaz to The Rolling Stones showcase a legend who has and continues to influence musicians across genres. Bobby Womack was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2009.
