Cadence Weapon continues to firmly establish his legacy as a sonic pioneer while constantly pushing the rap and electronic music envelope. Following his critically acclaimed, Polaris Music Prize nominated albums Breaking Kayfabe and Afterparty Babies and a two year term as Edmonton’s Poet Laureate, he returns with a brand new album, Hope In Dirt City out on Upper Class Recordings on May 29th.

Deemed by Dazed and Confused as "hip hop's saviour", Cadence Weapon is changing the game. Hope In Dirt City is a clearly defined and emotionally mature statement of intent that represents the culmination of these experiences. Pemberton applies an interesting approach to production using samples as a foundation for writing the album, then working with live instrumentalists to reconfigure his original compositions. Pemberton then turned the band-recorded tracks into samples for the album to “achieve a listenable, honest approach to integrating a live band into his setup”. “I wanted to have a live feel, but I didn’t want to sound like the Arsenio Hall band,” Pemberton told Paste. “I wanted to make it ambiguous between where the sample ends and the live band begins.” Referencing his album’s first single “Conditioning” Pemberton goes on to say, “Originally it was a drum machine demo, I wanted it to be a Bo Diddley song. I basically have a band play it as a rock song, then when I took it home, I switched it into half time and turned it into a hybrid-blues track.”

Composed of a unique hybrid of psychedelic soul, old school rap, IDM and mutant disco; Hope In Dirt City is a groundbreaking achievement in hip-hop. Cadence Weapon has returned to bring rap back to its essence.

Oldies: Angela Bofill - Angel of the Night (1979)

Второй альбом певицы латиноамериканского происхождения с незабываемым и невероятно красивым тембром голоса. Своим ранним творчеством Angela Bofill застала эпоху позднего соула, и первые альбомы по праву считаются лучшими в её дискографии. В 80-х же волна диско накрыла её с головой. Большую часть своей карьеры Анджела провела на лэйбле Arista, который переиздал и первые два альбома, первоначально выпущенные студией GRP. Одна из моих любимых певиц, этот вокал, по-моему, нельзя спутать ни с чьим другим..., ну и женщина, конечно, шикарная.

Angela Bofill proved herself extremely adroit at doing Latin, jazz, and R&B with equal finesse on her debut, Angie. Angel of the Night is the highly anticipated sophomore set originally released on GRP when it was distributed on Arista. With such a comfortable style well suited to Bofill's voice, this doesn't veer that far away from the work on the first album. The first track, the immediately classic "I Try," is beautifully sung, dramatic, and offers no false moments. The title track is just as effective in a gentle and lilting way. Angel of the Night's producers David Grusin and Larry Rosen, who also worked on Jon Lucien's 1973-1975 albums, cover some ambitious territory with a rich-voiced, quirky singer here as well. The epic "The Voyage" has the producers' sense of drama, a perfect match for Bofill's deliberate delivery, which is oddly though sweetly reminiscent of Lucien. "What I Wouldn't Do (For the Love of You)" and "The Feelin's Love" bring her to a more customary, sleek R&B material with her trademark vocals making them even better. The only thing that qualifies as a miss is a disco-style take on Thom Bell and Linda Creed's "People Make the World Go 'Round." It's not that bad, though. Angel of the Night is one of Bofill's finest and most charming albums. Any fan of sophisticated late-'70s R&B/Latin jazz need to have this in their collection.

PNC is one of the crop of New Zealand rappers to emerge from its surprisingly popular scene in the wake of local hero Scribe's success. Like many members of this scene, he accurately re-creates the American sound and voice of hip-hop, but uses it to discuss subject matter based on a uniquely New Zealand lifestyle.
Born in Palmerston North City, later his abbreviated namesake, Sam Hansen heard the first track from Jay-Z's 2000 album The Dynasty Roc la Familia at the age of 16 and immediately decided that he wanted to be a rapper. Four years later, he moved to Auckland with a handful of demos under his belt to join the Breakin Wreckwordz crew. After a guest appearance on DJ P-Money's second album, Magic City, holding his own alongside Scribe and Con Psy both in the songs and the tour that followed, he began to make a name for himself. In 2005 he signed to Dirty Records and released a mixtape, Ooooh on the PNC Tip. A year later he released his debut album, The Rookie Card, with P-Money, Scribe, and Con Psy returning the favor by turning in a guest appearance on a track each.

The Oxnard, California based beat-smith and emcee Oh No returns for a solo mission following two successful collaborative efforts alongside fellow producer/rapper The Alchemist as the power duo Gangrene -2010's Gutter Water and 2012's Vodka & Ayahuasca- and the 2011 gem with The Alchemist as Gangrene & Roc Marciano, the Greneberg EP.

This time, Oh No (born Michael Jackson; younger brother of Madlib and son of singer Otis Jackson) was granted unprecedented access to the Rudy Ray Moore / Dolemite audio archives and given free rein to slice, dice, chop and sample his way through the classic-yet-absolutely-filthy catalog. He was able to use legendary material from The Human Tornado, Petey Wheatstraw, the Dolemite Soundtrack and more, plus a multitude of previously unreleased and alternate acapellas and instrumentals.

The end result is Ohnomite, a 19 track head-banging extravaganza of sloppy funk, dirty soul, and brainy lyricism, all aimed at one thing- making your head nod and your ass shake. Much like his 2009 all-Ethiopian endeavor Dr. No's Ethiopium, Oh No tackles this with an unmatched ferocity and proper admiration for the source material. He combines side-splitting vocal outtakes with the right amount of hard-hitting drum breaks and soul samples to concoct a mixture sure to appeal to both old and new schoolers alike.
