Donwill and Von Pea — collectively known as Tanya Morgan — have been staples at the DopeHouse since its very existence, delivering a steady of stream of consistently good tunes throughout the last decade. After finally releasing a project with The Lessondary collective — Ahead of Schedule — in 2016, Don and Von have released their fourth album YGWY$4 (or, You Get What You Pay For).
The first TM album since 2013’s Rubber Souls, YGWY$4 features the likes of brandUn DeShay, Quelle Chris, Kev Brown and Astronote as well as Lessondary members AEON, Brick Beats, Jermiside and more.

The Perceptionists - бостонская группа, объединившая в начале тысячелетия таланты двух самых неординарных эмси из столицы Массачусетса: безумного гения Mr. Lif и преданного традициям виртуоза Akrobatik - к которым присоединился диджей и продюсер Fakts One. Они начали в 2004 году со сборника "The Razor", спустя год оказались на Definitive Jux, с которым выпустили всем известный "Black Dialogue", после чего разошлись по сольным карьерам.

Заполучив в 2015 году Mr. Lif и выпустив годом позже его сольный альбом-возвращение "Don't Look Down", лэйбл Mello Music Group решил пойти дальше и возродить марку The Perceptionists, тем более Akrobatik был явно не против сотрудничества. Отсутствие DJ Fakts One, вроде бы, никто и не заметил, во всяком случае переоценивать его значимость для группы никто не стал.

Альбом получился маленьким, как раз таким, чтобы дотянуть до LP. Mr. Lif и Akrobatik уже в статусе ветеранов и никого из штата продюсеров MMG на "Resolution", если не считать самого Lif'а, это удивляет и добавляет непредсказуемости релизу, возродившему The Perceptionists 12 лет спустя.

The first full-length from Mr. Lif & Akrobatik (The Perceptionists) in a dozen years reflects the struggles and near-death sagas that struck them. During that span, Lif miraculously survived his tour bus plummeting over a 38 foot cliff. Akrobatik weathered a sudden aortic rupture and emergency open-heart surgery. The impact of those experiences forced the former Def Jux duo to contemplate fate, luck, and their own place within a world spinning out of control.

But their ability to survive has allowed them to thrive. They’ve harnessed a radiant hard-won optimism that refuses to flinch from the evils of existence. From the album’s first track, “Early Mourning,” Akrobatik asserts that courage comes from within, but reflects on the millions of young black men sent to premature graves. He considers whether gang affiliation is inherent in their souls, or more likely, whether things would be different if these neighborhoods were well lit and effectively policed.

If turmoil and inequity currently wrack the globe at record levels, Lif’s verses seem more prophetic than ever. His verses offer searing indictments of corporate and political corruption: corporations oppressing local farms, governmental duplicity in dealing with big pharmaceutical companies, and the crooked brutality of cops who get away with shooting unarmed black men.

On “Hose Down,” the pair brilliantly intersperse news reports from the MLK-led Birmingham protests of 1963 with the internecine problems of the present—where a traffic stop can still lead to a funeral. It’s as poignant of a polemic as you’ll find, but blended with a danceable Caribbean lilt.

With the Perceptionists, the personal is political and vice-versa. Akrobatik rhymes about his “desire to breathe in the sun before my skin dries out” but still refuses to be “the coward in a pretend hide out.” On “Lemme Find Out,” they kick ingeniously sinister dystopian horror raps about our grotesque addiction to technology. There are love songs over beats that sound like they could’ve been on Madvillainy, stories of cypher demolitions of would-be challengers, and dirty ass rhymes over dirty ass drums—as The Perceptionists sagely insist, that’s all the world really wants.

It’s music from deep in the trenches, songs that confront the blitzkrieg of bad news but offer light at the end of the bombardment. If you listen closely, you can intuit a profound story of friendship and camaraderie between Lif and Akrobatik—lifelong friends trading bars with the chemistry of Tip and Phife, Andre and Big Boi, Erick and Parrish. They’re mortal men who made mistakes, gained experience, and obtained wisdom. This is Resolution.

Pro Era’s Nyck Caution and Kirk Knight have been releasing new music as the duo Nyck @ Knight over the past couple months, and now today their back with their debut self-titled EP.

Laced with 8 tracks in total, the project contains features from fellow Pro Era rappers, who appear only on the track “Audiopium,” meanwhile the rest of the project is handled solely by Nyck & Kirk.

"It wasn't making an album, it was making an experience," Knight said of the collaborative project. "We were working together on a song, and before we knew it we had a full project. Nyck @ Knight wasn't a plan but it came out of us.”

Nyck added: "We always talked about doing something like a project and that it would happen when the time was right, and once we started working we realized the time was finally right to get it done. Kirk is definitely my favorite producer to work with so it makes the project even that more special to me.”

Первый выход в свет большой электро-соул-джаз группы, в которую помимо самого Terrace Martin входят Robert Glasper, Kamasi Washington и другие музыканты.

На что не обратил внимание только ленивый, так это то, что все три столпа The Pollyseeds имеют отношение к творчеству Kendrick Lamar, особенно это касается Martin'а и Washington'а, которые и территориально ближе к хип-хоп сенсации. Но на самом деле эта деталь может быть использована только для того, чтобы без надобности нарушить покой тех, кому музыка с "Sounds Of Crenshaw" может совсем и не подойти, потому что хип-хопом здесь и не пахнет. Ровный, мелодичный звук, скорее присущий актуальному творчеству техасца Glasper'а, озаглавленный как музыкальная тема района Лос-Анджелеса, и, судя по всему, это только начало.

Даже музыканты, владеющие живыми инструментами, восхищаются тем, что J Dilla делал из сэмплов - очередное посвящение продюсеру от британского коллектива, ведомого саксофонистом Rob Mitchell. Зародившийся в городе Лидс проект Abstract Orchestra был вдохновлён живыми выступлением The Roots c Jay-Z и исполнением оркестра Miguel-Atwood Ferguson из 40 человек музыки, написанной всё тем же J Dilla (кстати, это можно оценить на YouTube - действительно впечатляет). Основное назначение ансамбля - воссоздание хип-хопа с помощью живых инструментов и даже вокальные сымплы получают новую жизнь. "Dilla" - первыйй альбом оркестра.

Description:

Led by Saxophonist Rob Mitchell, Abstract Orchestra seeks to reflect the diversity of music sampled by Hip-Hop producers by presenting music that has the complexity of jazz, framed within the simpler structures of Hip-Hop. Complex harmonies are framed within simple loops and complex bar structures and time signatures can pass by unnoticed. "I selected the tracks on the album with very much the live performance in mind" says band-leader and arranger Rob Mitchell "So the album is a reflection of the tour and the music we performed".

Inspired by the legendary live performances of The Roots with Jay-Z and the 40 piece orchestral arrangements by Miguel-Atwood Ferguson of the work of J Dilla, classic arranging techniques underpin modern loop-based structures.



The band itself is based on the classic jazz big band instrumentation of saxes, trumpets and trombones and features the cream of the north of England's jazz scene who collectively have played with Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae, Mark Ronson, Martha Reeves, John Legend & the Roots, Roots Manuva and Amy Winehouse.



"Dilla" by Abstract Orchestra is a tribute to the work of the highly acclaimed and influential producer. Opener"Welcome to Detroit/The Diary"takes the the vocal sample from Isaac Hayes's "Man's Temptation" and places it against lush brass and driving beats while"Workinonit"Transplants the original 10cc guitar samples from the Dilla original onto biting trumpets and aggressive saxes, underpinned as always by Joost Hendrickx's on point drumming. On"Stop"vocalist Anna Uhuru handles the Dionne Warwick vocal with assurance while the band lay down an arrangement that is reminiscent of the work of David Axelrod and Don Sebeskey, both big sources of inspiration for Abstract Orchestra.

The middle of the album revolves around 2 Dilla medleys featuring versions and sections of"Airworks", "ULove", "Last Donut"and"Welcome To The Show"."Raw Shit"sees Farfisa organ underpinning the insistent brass figures with the bass taking on an almost bassoon-like quality while "Official/Fall In Love"sees Anna & Akin provide a stunning vocal performance, trading lines over the delicate horn arrangement. "Fantastic"features theRhodes intro of the original which is then taken up by the flutes and baritone sax. Inspired by the work of 20th century classical composers like Barber and Copeland the 2nd half of the arrangement takes on an almost orchestral feel with shades of Gil Evans.

"Love","So Far To Go","A.N.G.E.L.", and"Sun In My Face"provide interesting takes on these well known Dilla originals while album closer"Two Can Win"(recently championed by Gilles Peterson on his BBC6 Music show) acts as a showcase for the variety of Anna Uhuru'svocals, blending the style of the original Sylvers track with Minnie Ripperton style harmonies, 70's funk and Lalo Schiffrin/JJ Johnson film score vibes.

DJ Harrison is Richmond VA-based producer and multi-instrumentalist Devonne Harris.

The son of a radio DJ who introduced him to the world of record collecting, Harris grew up with music, progressing from violin, to high school drum-line, to the Jazz Studies program at Virginia Commonwealth University. He also continued working with other instruments and developed an interest in sampling. His development as a producer – at first, without a computer or sampler – came first learning to replay samples on the drums, piano, bass or guitar.

DJ Harrison finds himself inspired by local musicians in the Richmond scene that’s as diverse and nonexclusive as they come. Among rappers, producers, punks and bluegrass bands, he falls within reach of an expansive pool of musicians to collaborate with. He lives and works in Jellowstone, a house turned recording compound occupied by his band mates in Butcher Brown, a “garage punk jazz funk” group.

HazyMoods, DJ Harrison’s Stones Throw debut, was recorded there completely on tape, where the living room functions as a communal recording studio.
