If you've caught Blackalicious on tour over the last fifteen years or so, you will have witnessed first hand the prodigious talent of Portland based rapper and singer Vursatyl. As well as playing a major role in the Blackalicious stage show, Vursatyl is set to feature on their eagerly awaited fourth album 'Imani' (released summer 2015). Standing toe to toe with Gift Of Gab, surely one of the most ferociously gifted MCs on the planet is no mean feat, but one which Vursatyl performs with ease.
Blackalicious producer and owner of Quannum Projects Chief Xcel discovered Vursatyl's crew 'Livesavas' back in the late 90's and invited them to join him on the road to promote the Quannum Spectrum album (which featured Jurassic 5, El-P and Souls of Mischief among many others). Describing Pete Rock’s productions do them little justice. They resonate in your gut, heart, and brain. The title of one of these beats says it all: “Makes Me Feel Like.” You fill in the blanks based on your personal experience and current mood.
Petestrumentals 2 conjures memories of BBQ cookouts and 70s Blaxploitation scores, rattling summer jeep cruises and blunted Jamaican vacations. There’s a gorgeous requiem to Dilla (“Dilla Bounce (R.I.P),” where the originator pays tribute to the prodigy. You see the full range of Rock’s gifts on display: the meticulously chopped horns, unquantized drums, and air raid sirens. It contains the emotion of a thousand eulogies.
No record can’t be resurrected. There’s no sub-genre or era that can’t be converted into Rock’s singular brand of soul. His music is the closest thing we’ll ever get to a time-traveling DeLorean, effortlessly shifting between past, present, and future.

EDO. G is back in 2015 with a new project entirely produced by Street Wyze, the newly signed duet of beatmakers on EFFISCIENZ.

On the RAP side, as Boston's most iconic rapper, EDO. G evolves on the tracks with his distinctive flow and one of a kind tone of voice.

Even though this album might seem concise, it remains wide when it comes to the various themes broached. Sometimes deep sound like on "G-Lo ( R.I.P. )", sometimes more personal on "Sorta Way" but always penetrating, Edo has that capacity to touch the audience emotionally by the diversity of his lyrics or every simple nuance of his voice.

On the production side, Street Wyze is delivering massive beats which provide a perfect platform to the Boston rapper to express himself and give shape to his writings. Ingenious use of samples, kicks and hi-hats, everything is gathered to bring the listeners to an "headnodic" state all along the project. Hard-hitting beats, catchy melodies, and an always "Real Hip-Hop" sound perfectly tuned to the emcee so that you finally attend a perfect combination of skills.

As for the guests, EDO. G teamed with long time accomplices Reks, Jaysaun and also with the new Boston scene represented by G.Dot & Born. Fans who are familiar with our releases will also recognize some pioneers and close rappers of the EFFISCIENZ label with Dirt Platoon, Fel Sweetenberg, Union Blak, Starvin B and Nutso. Dj Djaz and Dj Netik are also part of the event and deliver some mind blowing scratches on several tracks.

In short, this little masterpiece will be out June 19 on CD and colored vinyl in a limited edition of 500 copies. In two words : "BE PREPARED" !

Wu-Tang founding MC Inspectah Deck and veteran duo 7L & Esoteric are back with their sophomore album 'Every Hero Needs A Villain' featuring MF Doom, Method Man, GZA, R.A The Rugged Man, JuJu (The Beatnuts), Large Professor and Meyhem Lauren!

In 2013, the trio appeared relatively unassumingly with their self-titled debut, which was chiefly produced by DJ 7L and included guests ranging from Ghostface Killah and Cappadonna to Vinnie Paz, Action Bronson and Roc Marciano. The soon-to-be acclaimed group found out quickly that there was a groundswell of hip-hop fanatics thirsting for the lunchpail, lyrics-above-all-else rap they fell in love with in the '90s. Several pressings of the album on CD, 2-LP and even cassette later, they are back and ready to up the ante.

This time around the group is the same, but it's fair to say that all three men have stepped up their game. "We knew how we felt about the last album, but weren't sure how it would be received by listeners," explains MC Esoteric. "But people really responded to it, even more than we had hoped. That gave us the confidence to really spread our wings and let loose on this one. The chemistry is even tighter this time around. We know exactly what lanes we are cruising in and what weight class we are fighting in for Round 2."

Inspectah Deck adds, "Czarface is like the Danger Room for the X-Men, I can use all my weapons on there. When I'm in Wu-Tang, I have to come a certain way because we have a certain style of fan, when I'm here doing the Czarface projects, it allows me to actually be an MC, it allows me to actually just spit...I love that. I love when i can just spit freely and just be an MC."

The fighting analogy – whether drawn from pugilism or '80s wrestling, both which figure into Every Hero Needs A Villain – is an apt one, considering the unrelenting lyrical attacks that Deck and Esoteric unleash on track after track, each trying to one-up the previous verse. Best of all, it is friendly camaraderie, based around a loose theme of renegade mutant MC talents running wild. DJ 7L explains, "All three of us are influenced by comics, sci-fi movies, TV, wrestling. Czarface encompasses all of that, and it helps with the visuals as well."

On the production side, 7L shows yet again – as he did with the group's debut – that he remains a formidable yet underappreciated musical force, constantly providing hard, funky and alternatingly ominous backdrops for the assembled MCs to use as lyrical luge paths.

If that wasn't enough, it's all iced with a ridiculously intricate and beefy 70-plus page, hardcover CD casebook with lyrics and extensive artwork by Gilberto Aguirre Mata (El Ultimo Codice) and L'amour Supreme, and with "Death & Abduction," a comic written by Esoteric; and an explosive, comic-book-inspired cover by L'amour Supreme (Mishka NYC). The release will also be available as a Double LP on Clear vinyl which includes the full comic book.

On "The M.O.N.E.Y." Ea$y shows his versatility by effortlessly shifting gears between battle ready rhymes ("All Been Waiting," "Nothin' Alike," "Hit The Fan") displayed heavily on the "Dollars" side to more conceptual & introspective records on the "Sense" side ("Takin' It With Me," "Money & Blood" as well as the title track) all while focusing to the concept of the album title. Never one to compromise artistic integrity, Ea$y even manages to craft a record for the ladies (the Jared Evan assisted "Took It All Away") without straying away from his sound.

During times where lyrics almost no longer matter in Hip Hop, Ea$y never loses a step lyrically throughout the LP and with Statik Selektah handling the majority of the production, neither do the beats. Like many other rappers, Ea$y is no stranger to the streets and has even suffered the setback of jail time. But, like many of those same rappers who use the gangster image as a gimmick and most times as a crutch, Ea$y chooses to let the music speak for itself. " I feel as though MCs focus on portraying a certain image to hide the fact that they lack talent," says Ea$y. And that there is right on "The M.O.N.E.Y."
