De La Soul какой уже год пытаются вернуться, и у них начинает получаться это всё лучше. В феврале группа анонсировала долгожданный студийный LP  с названием "And The Anonymous Nobody". Я был настолько уверен, что он не выйдет 29 апреля, что даже не ставил этот релиз в Release Dates. Однако же, ожидаемо перенеся дату выхода альбома, De La в качестве компенсации выложили 4 бесплатных трека, иронично назвав получившийся EP "For Your Pain & Suffering" и пометив на обложке, что альбом - 26 августа.

This record is, in its purest form, American music. The artist formerly known as Aaron Livingston knows his nation and its sounds well. Born to a preacher and a teacher in Los Angeles, where he learned how to listen and how to play before moving east to New York and New Jersey. He dropped in and out of schools and scenes in Manhattan then Philadelphia, and there he collaborated with acts like The Roots and RJD2. He first planted his flag as Son Little with last year’s highly praised EP, Things I Forgot, a small collection of big songs that showcased his ability to hop across genres as well as he does state lines.

The songs on Son Little’s full length teem with small moments creating a bigger picture, a pointillist art piece made from junkyards and viewed from space. Pulling inspiration from the color wheel diaspora of American music, Son Little draws from a deep well, using different buckets to visit and revisit, finding flourishes to add to the core of his songs. There, at the end of “Doctor’s In,” is a roving banjo; there, at the start of “Go Blue Blood Red,” is a keyboard riff culled from a kid’s Blue Man Group keyboard; there, in “Carbon,” is an electric Howlin’ Wolf stomp and start. For Son Little, studio time is a joy, where every good idea leads to four more.

Новый продюсерский альбом Factor'а следует за обратившим на себя внимание в 2013 году концептуальным проектом "Woke Up Alone".

Фактория - это недостроенный город-призрак, руины которого находятся рядом с Саскатуном, родным городом продюсера. Перед началом Первой мировой войны предприниматель из Чикаго Robert E. Glass перебрался в Канаду, где планировал построить крупный промышленный город, чему помешали война, экономический кризис и невозможность обеспечить Факторию электроэнергией. В итоге она превратилась в город-призрак.

Description:

The ruins of the failed city of Factoria lie under the residential subdivision of Silverwood Heights in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, the hometown of producer extraordinaire Graham Murawsky (aka Factor Chandelier). Just prior to World War I, Chicago entrepreneur Robert E. Glass ventured north with dreams of building an elaborate industrial city in a formerly typhoid-riddled area that would house a brick plant, flour mill, brewery, school, post office, restaurant, hotel, and whatever else progress would afford. But before his development plans could come into fruition, war, the cessation of banks issuing credit, and the inability to secure electrical power turned Factoria into a ghost town. Inspired by the obscure story of the Magic City that never was, Factor Chandelier has crafted a 13-track album that pays homage to Factoria and wonders what could have been.

On the Factoria LP, Chandelier's follow-up to the 2013 concept album Woke Up Alone, he builds a city of expansive beats that bang with punishing drums and industrial clatter at one moment and exude a melodic, pastoral calm the next. The sounds shift on the album in accordance with the hope that the city began with and the wartime entropy that engulfed it. Recorded and mixed by Factor at his Chandelier Studios in Saskatoon, the album incorporates the bass of Enver Hampton, violin and guitar from The Pxrtals, and guest vocals from a host of Fake Four family and friends.

Factoria opens up with "The Magic City", a glossy, post-apocalyptic instrumental reminiscent of Ratatat segueing into Kirby Dominant's geographical cure pondering on the upbeat title track. Open Mike Eagle brings his emotive, pensive musings to "Dozer II" while Awol One, Gregory Pepper, and Ceschi reunite over the funky bass of "Noise Band", a gloomy, self-deprecating sequel to their 2009 collaboration with Factor on "Back Then". Myka 9 explores the concept of building through an abstract historical context on "Shoulders of Giants" before "Old Organs" closes out the record with crashing drums, eerie organs, and wraith-like wails.

What may have driven Glass to Factoria, beyond monetary gain, is the desire to create something in his vision, to build a city of infinite possibilities where people could settle and seek their fortune amongst a serene central Canadian backdrop. On the same hallowed ground, Factor Chandelier has built a decade and a half worth of beats for Canadian comrades, west coast underground legends, and indie rap cult heroes from all over the map. Augmented by Factor's chemistry with emcees he has worked with for years, Factoria is a beacon illuminating the streets that paved over the ruins of the Magic City.

The Boston prophet’s first new work for Mello Music Group directly addresses the difficulties of keeping your head up amidst duress. You hear and feel the intensity of the fight, the sense of falling into despair, the helplessness of drowning, and the power of being able to save yourself.

Over a 10-song cycle, Lif delivers poetic testament that avoids preachiness. These are agnostic sermons written to conceal and nurture him during a bleak period—cathartic confessionals that offered a conduit to bliss. The structure of “Don’t Look Down” mirrors this personal descent and rebirth, a hero’s journey worthy of Joseph Campbell.

It starts with “Pounds of Pressure” and “The Abyss,” adrenaline-pulsing sagas where the narrator clutches his pistol, soaked in sweat. Over bone-bristling drums and smears of disembodied vocal samples, Lif’s protagonist is engulfed in violence, pushed to the precipice, forced into a fight-or-flight scenario. This emotional rupture leads into the depression of the third track, “Everyday We Pray”—where the hero ruminates on personal storms and the patterns of his demise—praying for discipline and the strength to be honest.

By the song’s conclusion, optimism has started to seep back into his worldview. “Let Go” reflects that with its self-admonition to search deeper and think smarter, let the light shine, and unburden oneself from the pain of the past. “A Better Day” captures the zenith of this positivity, filtered through realism and clarity. It’s a call to arms to rebuke the cosmetic and prosthetic, to scale these walls and “beat this vile prison we call living.”

With "Whizdom," "Mission Accomplished", & "World Renown," the central character creates his own world, barricading himself from the ills of society. He’s aided by a beat from Edan and verses from Akrobatik (Lif’s partner in The Perceptionists) and Del the Funky Homosapien. The final act hinges on “iLL,” where the vulnerabilities creep back to the surface, incubating a state of reflection, in which the protagonist ponders the ways of the world—wishing for something more, wondering if this is heaven or another self-created hell.

The concepts all come to a powerful resolution on the finale, the title track that hauntingly echoes this mantra of resilience. Over taut minor piano chords, Lif tries to make sense of it all before the final fall, weary with a head full of ideas, a spirit unbowed, offering one last reminder that our most severe stumbles often lead to our greatest successes.

J-Zone, self-proclaimed "jack of all trades, master of zero," may be familiar to you for any one of his six lives: Indie hip-hop's class clown; an off-kilter producer with his own identifiable style; a frustrated music business casualty who penned a nervy memoir about the life of the working class musician (Root For The Villain); a tongue-in-cheek, encyclopedic music journalist; a late-blooming drummer with a knack for channeling the spirit of classic break beats or a DJ with a deep love for funk 45s.

On his seventh solo album (and twelfth overall), Fish-n-Grits, J-Zone visits all the stops of an artistic and musical journey that spans well over two decades. Comprised of both limited edition 7" vinyl-only releases (dating back to 2014) and all new material, Fish-n-Grits is equal parts vocal and instrumental. The New York native uses his rap time to pick fights with the delusional state of the music industry, gentrification, the good and bad of nostalgia, police brutality, political correctness and hip-hop's generational conflicts, but never without his signature brands of humor and sarcasm intact.

As a student of samplers, drummer, multi-instrumentalist and collector of archaic studio gear, Zone was able to chef Fish-n-Grits into his most sonically versatile album to date. A stew of dirty, funky live drumming, bizarre samples, pulsating percussion and menacing bass that stretches in vibe from a circa 1969 funk instrumental to a twisted, analog interpretation of trap music, Fish-n-Grits has moments inspired by just about everyone. It's obvious that The Meters, Prince Paul, The Incredible Bongo Band, Project Pat, Kool and the Gang, Public Enemy, George Clinton, Kool Keith, Bernard Purdie and Tim Dog have all carved out space in Zone's music library, but the sound remains his own.

J-Zone's zany alter egos (Chief Chinchilla and Swagmaster Bacon) also get booth time, as do long time collaborators Al-Shid, Prince Paul and Has-Lo. Serving as a bridge between Zone's 2013 comeback offering (Peter Pan Syndrome) and a forthcoming group project with Prince Paul and Sacha Jenkins (SuperBlack), Fish-n-Grits captures his development as an artist and musician, with occasional nods to the past.

In the meantime, J-Zone can be found laying down drum tracks (Danger Mouse, Marco Polo, Stretch & Bobbito Documentary, Fresh Dressed, his own drum break series), throwing down live funk 45 sets, repping SuperBlack, making the occasional beat and interviewing unsung musicians for Red Bull Music Academy.
