An album about courting death through self-destructive behavior, "Death Doesn't Want You" approaches the party lifestyle from several angles, with songs celebrating debauchery giving way to ones addressing the emotional toll of hard living. Esh the Monolith, the vocal piece of the two-headed werewolf, wrote much of the project during a self-described unstable period. That phase birthed the concept of the record: if his lifestyle couldn't kill him, it was clear that death didn't want him.
Musically, the album draws on a wide array of influences, feeding elements of punk, surf, '50s-style pop, drum & bass and dance hall into a hip hop format. Produced as a collaborative effort and utilizing mostly live instrumentation, "Death Doesn't Want You" features musical contributions from members of bands such as Radclyffe Hall, Boogie Boy Metal Mouth, Bad Rabbits and Tigerman Woah!, as well as guest verses from veteran wordsmiths Slaine and Reks.
Friends since a chance meeting on their first day of college, the duo first officially paired up for 2013's "Nightworks" EP. Each brings a rich musical background to the collaboration: Esh's previous work earned him a spot on XXL's 15 Boston Rappers You Should Know, while The Arcitype has gained notoriety both as a producer for various rap heavyweights including Vinnie Paz and La Coka Nostra, and as co-owner of the Cambridge-based recording studio, The Bridge Sound and Stage.

When you've been in an industry for over 20 years, adaptation and evolution are key functions in any field. If you're Kevin Hansford aka K-Def, you've seen good, you've seen bad, you've seen change and on occasion, you've seen history repeat itself. For some artists, staying true and being innovative can be a fine line and a struggle. On one hand, a reputation is built from birth creating a connection that should always be maintained. On the other hand, growth or lack of growth will occur whether change is embraced. A producer like K-Def would not still exist today in 2016 without being aware of those survival tactics. In a society dictated by technology, it's hard to imagine the world as we know it without the devices and digital platforms we entertain unconsciously.
As he continues to push himself, more recently K was inspired to track down all of his original 90's gear and works dating prior to his software transition after a recent resurgence of old machines from the younger generation. That meant pulling out 2 full trash bags of floppy disks, revitalizing his old MPC 3000 to new condition, dusting off rack sampler modules and hunting down his MPC 60ii which was the first machine he used debuting in 1993 under Marley Marl. Going through that process brings us K-def's new album, The Way It Was. The title sums it up. Instead talking about dues he paid and the roots of his skill set, The Way it Was is a living demonstration for younger listeners who grew up after the 90's and his core fans who remember the days of his Lords of the Underground, Real Live, Mic Geronimo and World Renown productions like yesterday. Though mostly instrumental, frequent collaborator Blu appears on 3 tracks. Blu was inspired to record the socially aware, "The Boys" and the lively "Strawberry Lemonade" (featuring Damu the Fudgemunk and newcomer Kunal) after hearing K-Def's original demo cassettes. Moka Only To Release 12 Albums In 2016
There are prolific artists, and then there is Moka Only. The BC-based hip-hop songsmith who found fame as a member of Swollen Members has just announced plans to release an album every month in 2016.
According to a press release from his label URBNET, Moka Only “aims to include new recordings, mystery albums with exclusive unreleased music from the vaults of 2002-2003, as well as collaborative projects from Torchlight Commission crew members including Illa-J, Jon Rogers, Tanya Morgan among others.”
URBNET head Darryl Rodway tells FYI that “from what I know, a majority is new original material, plus some music from his archives. He is restoring a number of old recordings that were stored on ADAT tapes that were never released. He finally found a ADAT machine to export these recordings, so there will be a mix of older material as well."
In the press release release, Moka Only is quoted as explaining “this is not coming out of a place of competition but simply a desire of uninhibited expression.”
Rodway tells us that “Moka presented the idea to us late last fall. We were thrilled about it. He has always made more music then we have normally put out, and this will be a game changer for us. This is a whole new level of artistic productivity, for I’m not aware of this been done before. I believe people have tried, but never actually completed this number of record in one year. “
Most of these Moka Only albums will only be available in digital form, but select titles will be available on vinyl LP, cassette and CD.
Rodway says the number of releases to be offered in more than a digital format “is yet to be determined. Manufacturing schedules can easily delay the release process, so we are now working with our suppliers to work out a game plan. We always work as partners with Moka so that decision will be something we both will be part of. “
Moka Only has gained an international audience with his solo records. “Japan and Germany are his strongest markets outside of Canada,” says Rodway. “The US is his largest market though, accounting for at least 60% of his sales.”
The first release of 2016 will be a 13-track album entitled Brutal, to be released on Jan. 2.
This burst of creative output is not new for Moka Only, as he’s already released over 50 recordings (some under such pseudonyms as Ron Contour, The Durable Mammal and Flow Torch. He has also collaborated with such influential US artists as J Dilla and MF Doom.
As part of Swollen Members, Moka Only earned three Juno awards for Best Rap Recording, while his solo work has brought him multiple MuchMusic Video Awards.

Расстраивает, что многие приверженцы Золотой эры не особо оригинальничают ни в чём, в итоге альбомы, кричащие с обложки о возрождении того, что давно стало историей, и воспринимаются все как и один и звучат однообразно. Дуэт продюсеров 12 Finger Dan и B-Base даже название своей группы позаимствовал у Pete Rock'а - настолько всё аутентично. - Надеюсь после прослушивания нового EP от Soulbrotha мы с вами скажем это без сарказма, тем более его почтили своим присутствием Craig G, Afu-Ra и даже Marley Marl.

Them That Do.....and you're damn right. "Do" was the right verbiage chosen to represent this group made up of 3 emcees and a beatmaker/producer. Yes, we live in a digital age where collaborations need not occur on a face-‐to-‐face basis, but when they do, it's quite special. It takes effort for grown men, each with their own individual aims, aspirations, families, and livings to make, to assemble collectively, build with each other, and create music. Songs don't build themselves and writers don't all relate to each other, which is what makes the cohesiveness of this unit stand out. Jazz samples and dusty-‐breaks forge the sonic scenery across the length of the album, albeit with a sense of modernity, simply "being", as opposed to "trying to be".
Responsible for corralling all of the groups components, Phat Hentoff (formerly, MDA, short for Mellow Drum Addict), of Lancaster, PA, has been putting together quality projects with proficiency over the last ten years, a la Dante Ross, only that he is the artist, as well along with being the web that connects many talented individuals. It's worth taking note how his melodic vocal stylings seem always to fit just right over the jazz sample-‐laden backdrops heard throughout the album, adding another dimension to the sound between 2 other emcees. Jasper Brown, hailing from the Washington D.C., is also a veteran master of the ceremonies. From first listen, Jasper strikes you as an artist with a unique voice and signature rhyme pattern which never seems to grow tired, always finding a way to nestle within the music, without sacrificing content. Each verse has a clear and concise point, as if he were speaking directly to the listener, which isn't surprising when one learns that he is the son of a preacher.Rounding out the trio of vocalists is Chuck Daily, coming from Lancaster, PA. The youngest member of the group, he effortlessly displays the ability to truly get right to the crux of things, not only with the words he chooses, but with an understanding of how tone of voice can convey messages that words cannot.
The group's producer, Small Professor, comes to us from Philadelphia, PA. He possesses a fluidity in his production techniques that allows samples which have been chopped up to be laid back out without sounding “frenzied”, and that compliments the vibe of the album beautifully. Small Pro also has a knack for picking just the right breaks to build the foundation beneath each sample.With “Them That Do”, there is an overarching sense of clarity which allows the listener to at once be engaged, but not overcome, by all of the elements which combined to create the listening experience.
Featuring appearances by Georgia Anne Muldrow, Muhsinah, Jahdan Blakkamoore, John Robinson, and Miles Bonny, amongst others, we are met with a finished product which highlights the diversity of the human experience through words and sounds, and allows us to see (or hear, rather) the peace within it all.

Судя по синглам, ничего качественно нового ветеран на этот раз не приготовил, в этом плане был интересен его предыдущий одноимённый релиз 2013 года, который, кстати, получил золотой статус.
