Growing up as an avid listener and collector of music, Freddie Joachim began djing in the mid 90’s, which progressed into recording and producing his own music. He has performed around the world, headlining shows in Asia, South Africa, Europe, and North America, sharing the stage with artists such as, Jean Grae, Joss Stone, Jimmy Cliff, Ali Shaheed Muhammad (ATCQ), Teeko, DJ Babu, Rakaa Iriscience, Bobbito, Scoop Deville, Blu, Choice37, and others. Группа относится больше к экспериментальному направлению, вот и название Injury Reserve, и обложка альбома, и присутствие JPEGMAFIA служат небольшими предостережениями для неподготовленного слушателя. На двух EP, которые предшествовали этому релизу, была ещё странная зубная тема, но сейчас от неё ушли. Тут нас жду ломаные биты и сложные рифмы, так что, возможно, будет чем перебиться, пока milo не вернулся.

Let’s offer a toast to the return of Chris Orrick, rap’s poet laureate of imperial decline. It’s springtime in the dystopia, the birds are coughing up blood, the bees are dying at an alarming rate, and Michigan’s most acerbic misanthrope has emerged from winter hibernation with a clutch of doomed stanzas about cold pizza and liver destruction. His latest for Mello Music Group, Out to Sea, might not be easy listening, but it’s impossible to ignore.

Consider Orrick the wry heir to the morbid humor of Mitch Hedberg, the barfly blues of Charles Bukowski, and the caustic rust belt satire of Michael Moore. He’s an iconoclast from a proud tradition—a thoughtful and sensitive realist who uses laughter as a way to stifle the tears. The album begins with an act of contrition: a disembodied voice shakily addresses an audience: “if I brought you down, thank you very much for showing me where I’m at. I guess I don’t really have much more to do.”

But it’s more than words, as it usually is. The voice wobbles into a weird space, trembling and swaying, unsure whether it’s about to crack up or weep inconsolably. The audience doesn’t seem to know what to do—nervously giggling and half-groaning. Then he continues, “if you don’t want me to continue then I guess I won’t.” Before it fades out, he again adds, “thank you for showing me where I’m at.”

It’s testament to Orrick’s self-lacerating genius that he can’t offer anything less than uncomfortable, sliced-to-the-marrow honesty. This is where he’s at and there is never a second of subterfuge. He will be the first to call himself a drunken, overweight Midwesterner riddled with social anxiety, consumed by fear and loathing, whose primary gift and weapon is writing songs and tape recording them.

If it hurts to listen to this record, it should. It’s an anvil-split hangover, a brutal unflinching document of a 30-year old man terrified that these words could be his last. He’s watched too many friends die young of heart attacks and overdoses, cancer and suicide. He tries to numb himself because he feels too much. He is too self-aware for self-pity, but too set in his ways to change. This is reality rap of a different strain—one that lives up to Prodigy’s axiom to put “your lifetime between the paper lines.”

Out to Sea began without any overarching ideas—writing as a way of figuring out what he needed to say and as a form of catharsis. Themes of stormy weather and disastrous climate started to materialize from the fog of word. It was an easy leap to link them with mental illness and the diseased discourse that has infected the political climate in the Trump era. Out to Sea is an attempt to communicate beyond reductive binaries—not some naïve both-sides-ism bullshit but a fragile and lasting document sketched through a vale of sadness and a haunted concern for humanity.

There are, of course, the songs, messages in a bottle that alternate between comic sketches and S.O.S flares. It starts “Out to Sea,” a rum-soaked missive about being alienated from society.” “Funny Things” is a poison pill slipped to the far right, who offer mean-spirited jokes throughout our downward spiral. “Liquor Store Hustle” is a hilarious vignette about a corner store run to buy the most disgusting food that you’d drunkenly want to eat. While “A Dying Man” artfully interpolates Elliott Smith’s “Fond Farewell,” a harrowing portrait of substance abuse. The most devastating of all might be “Wallow Hard,” where Orrick stares into the abyss, considering whether all of this effort has been a waste, and assessing whether he should just give up the ghost or become one himself.

In the hands of a lesser artist, these are themes and moments that could seem melodramatic or overwrought but with Orrick, there is a rare sense of consequences and lament, a brilliant gift for dark poesy and sly self-deprecating humor. It is music to cope and as a form of survival, a chance to find meaning in a world that frequently seems bereft of it—a record that will leave you shaken to the core, reconsidering the radiation and delirium that gradually has consumed modern life. If we still exist in a few decades, we will be able to return to Out to Sea, and listen to the soundtrack of a society that seems hopelessly adrift

Dope KNife is a Liberian-American MC/producer and self-described “Rap Junkie.” Born Kedrick Mack, to a Liberian mother and American diplomat father, he spent his childhood hopping the globe before being taken by Hip-Hop and claiming Savannah, GA as home. As one of the founding members of the Dope Sandwich hip-hop collective, he gained a reputation as a formidable freestyle rapper, as well as honed his unique style of “Progressive Boom Bap.” His style was cultivated in Savannah's freestyle-heavy scene of the early 2000's, where he distinguished himself with a darker and more abrasive approach. He has officially dropped several well-received solo projects including 2017’s Strange Famous Records release NineteenEightyFour, and the EP Weekend At Brodie’s on Fake Four Inc.

As he prepares a new body of work, his mantra has remained the same: “Dope raps, dope beats, dope songs, it ain’t rocket science.”

After nearly two years of touring the country with the likes of Sage Francis, DJ Abilities, and Ceschi Ramos, he started to put the pieces in place for what would become Things Got Worse. A self-contained project (Dope Knife produced all of the songs as well as designed the artwork), KNife calls the album a “collection of visceral songs, crafted to serve as Rorschach that we can project or reflect meaning onto. From claustrophobic Black paranoia, to Grindhouse Hip-Hop references, Things Got Worse is whatever your mind hears it to be.”

Cynicism is an easy sell. We’re skeptical of harmony because the news sows division, social media runs on scorn, and tangible reminders of good have become increasingly rare. Yet there are those whispered moments of unity, those artists who effortlessly embody the ideals of fusion –those who allow us to reap the rewards that can only yielded from an embrace of different ideas, cultures, and sounds. This is the genius of Seba Kaapstad.

Seba Kaapstad is a multi-national neo-soul quartet comprised of a South African, a Swazi, and two Germans. They summon the most powerful manifestation of creativity: music that represents an idea. Their Mello Music debut album, Thina, takes its name from the Zulu word for “us.” It is a gorgeous halo of soul, encompassing several continents worth of sound, and obliterating the notion of genre. It is divined by artists whose lineage is riven with trauma and suffering. But like their ancestors, they endured. And only in this futuristic present could they reconcile the perseverance and turmoil of the past, using music to inspire unity and heal.

They conjure beatific grooves that radiate with alluvial soul, celestial jazz, electronic experimentation and the polyrhythmic essence of Africa. It is marrow music, what digs beneath your bones, seeping into your bloodstream and inner visions. If the sonic roots lie in the tessaracts of eternal memory, Seba Kaapstad’s present-day genesis trace to 2013, the year that Sebastian Schuster arrived in Cape Town and immediately fell in the love with its rich cultural tapestry, legendary musical community, and artful chaos. He soon paired with the rest of the band—Zoe Modiga, Philip Scheibel (Pheel), Ndumiso Manana—developing the sort of telepathic chemistry can’t be replicated or really even explained.

You hear this harmonic synthesis all over Thina. Each song is a symphony of its own. Take “Don’t,” which opens with glistening pianos and a head-bobbing slap, then Zoe Modiga unleashes her sky-rattling voice, alternating between near-rapping and time-stopping, levitating multi-octave solos—all the while paraphrasing Shakespeare. And in the last minute, there’s an exquisite string coda that you’d expect to hear at a world-class philharmonic.

There’s "Breathe," which OkayAfrica raved was “a refreshing combination of the crew's different influences…as much of a Friday/Saturday night jam as a Sunday morning one.” It’s a spiritual hymn in search of water and solace, a loose-limbed rhythm that echoes the themes of Fela and the jams of classic Electric Ladyland neo-soul. While the title track alternates between Zulu and English, as Modiga offers inspirational uplift and timeless lyrics about the natural elements.

This is what Seba Kaapstad capture: the notion of the axis mundi, where all points converge, and all tensions dissolve into something that proves that reality can occasionally be suffused with pure beauty. At least for 12 songs at a time.

Description:

Ohbliv has caught recent looks for his hugely prolific output, a fiery catalogue of 50 Bandcamp releases, celebrated collabs, and an entry on Fat Beats’ prestigious Baker’s Dozen series. Not a bad ascendant for someone who started in the late ‘90s emulating past masters through making pause-tapes.

“I’m 36. I grew up on Large Pro, Pete Rock, Preemo, Ced Gee, Paul C, Bomb Squad, especially the pause tape aesthetic. In my developmental stages, those are the main ones,” he says, before adding: “My parents are also a big inspiration. I feel like my dad was a real digger before it was even a thing. I’ve found records in his collection that I haven’t even found out in the field while I’m digging. I credit him for that.”

Richmond, Virginia isn’t particularly known for its booming music scene but Ohbliv (pronounced “Obliv,” short for Oblivion) has seen a steady rise in awareness of his hometown’s musical offerings. On his local scene, he says: “Everybody has his or her own style. There are pockets and different sounds. There’s the more street side of things, the more traditional hip-hop, the more progressive guys. There’s no one solid style, everyone’s doing their own thing, but everyone works together too.” 2018’s joint with another Richmond stalwart artist, Fly Anakin, produced Backyard Boogie and cemented this notion, showcasing a mature beatsmith who could thoughtfully lace Anakin’s colorful rhymes with dynamic boom-bap.

This year, Ohbliv reunites with Fat Beats with whom he’s always had a fruitful working relationship. “I would consider this a proper follow up to the second Baker’s Dozen release. I also have two tapes through Fat Beats, two Lewse Joints cassettes. But this is the first proper follow-up,” he says. With a lot of familial pride and years of experience behind this moment, the new album is fittingly titled, Give Thanks.

The project is a woozy pastiche of eclectic samples chopped to bits with the aid of an SP-4O4, PT01 turntable, and digi-recorder. While Ohbliv does use an MPC 2000 here and then, the 404-SX is his main weapon of choice. “I’ve just always end up within the Roland family,” he says.

The title cut is Dilla-esque in the best, most respectful and un-trite way those words possibly entail. “Give Thanks is me digging deeper into my style but stretching it a bit. Different sample sources and different quality of samples, like using vinyl-based originals, he says. “I was also able to learn and used different mixing techniques for an overall cleaner sound.”

Following up 'The Power of Same', the first single off 14KT's new project, featuring Muhsinah, and remixed by Kaidi Tatham, 'For My Sanity' is a "freedom project", an album rooted in free creation, without being tied down by bars, patterns, scenes, and sequences. The intention behind this long-player is clearly stated all throughout the 12 tracks: releasing the angst of the current climate we are facing through collective artistic means.

"I made all the music really late at night after my day-to-day work, as an escape from "what I normally do". Paired with the everyday struggles of being an artist, it was very stressful hearing about so many deaths––especially due to law enforcement. Making "For My Sanity" was how I was trying to find peace of mind every night so I could go to sleep." says 14KT.

The themes of the album sway gracefully from personal philosophies and creeds, to burning social matters and celebration of the importance of family and genuine, fruitful friendships. If we were to classify this in a genre, we would say For My Sanity is a jazz record, at its core, but elements of hip hop, soul, r'n'b and latin music are easily recognisable and at home on the album.

"I challenged myself to create a jazz album, primarily using Native Instruments Maschine. 85% of the album was created on there. The rest was my amazing friends and myself playing instruments." KT continues.


'For My Sanity' features an array of fellow visionaries - Jimetta Rose, Masego, Mark de Clive-Lowe, Muhsinah, James Poyser, Stro Elliot, Rasheeda Ali, Farnell Newton, Kris Johnson, Magestik Legend –– who help deliver the message and further relay the essence of what the album stands for.

The journey of this release is a story in itself, as the primary thought wasn't for it to be released, especially with a label. But when this landed in DJ Gilla's inbox, and then shared with the First Word team, it was clear that the music was right up First Word's street.

IAMABEENIE is a name that denotes a series of jazz-Influenced albums 14KT is currently working on.

Carrying the torch for griots across every region throughout multiple decades of Hip-Hop, Cashus King’s influences amount to a melting pot that’s both an acquired taste and a sound familiar to the chosen few who can fully grasp his left of center approach. Secluded from the public eye unless he’s speaking through music, he injects self-determination within his art and turns his thoughts inward towards growing into his best self as a man and as an artist. Traditionally releasing projects centered around love each Valentine’s Day, It’s Not U...It’s Me has Cashus King introspectively addressing his own strengths and flaws instead, making for a worthy extension of the Dirty Science crew’s long running track record of hard hitting autobiographical work.

A product of sunny LA’s hard times, Cashus King’s developmental stages presented a number of diverse perspectives. A privileged Catholic school background would go on to find him well acclimated with gang culture in the city’s historic Leimert Park after his father’s tragic passing. Explaining this casual affiliation in a section of town associated with the progressive bohemian Project Blowed movement, Cashus says “Leimert has a really rich black culture as far as art and music go, but it’s in between two Crip gangs. The Rollin 40s are going south and the Rollin 30s are going north. I was allowed to be myself and never pressured to join a gang, but that element gave me somewhere to go and a sense of belonging.”

Always in tune with his emotions as he pursues inner zen, Cashus King has mastered his craft by studying limitless source material from elite Hip-Hop predecessors. Showing love to his home before anything, he says “I was greatly influenced stylistically by Aceyalone, but everything from the early ‘90s into the 2000s had an impact on me.” Delving further into influences that have catalyzed his output, Cashus explains “A lot of people can be closed minded about other sounds, but I was even a big fan of No Limit acts like Mac, Fiend and Master P. Big Rube on Outkast’s ATLiens influenced me to get into poetry and spoken word and Twista had me obsessed with rhyme schemes. But it was 2Pac’s Me Against The World that had the greatest influence on my subject matter, that album told me it was okay to be sensitive and talk about things like your mom, your pain, depression and insecurities.“

WIth It’s Not U...It’s Me being the first in a long line of planned releases, Cashus King expects 2019 to be his most prolific year yet. Continuing to speak his personal truths to whoever’s willing to listen, he takes a humanitarian approach to figuring life out, saying “I don’t derive my moral code from religion. You have to choose a path of light or dark and develop an internal drive to be a good person, some days I mess up and do the wrong thing, but I try to do the right thing.”

Sharing space amongst LA’s underground elite while going unrecognized compared to some of his peers, Cashus King takes responsibility for this obscurity with the same stark sense of self-awareness that’s contained within his verses, noting “I’m reclusive and it’s affected my music. This is a social industry, you have to get out there, talk to people and build connections. It’s not about how productive you are if the people don’t know the music is out there.”

Christian Scott aTunde Adjuah sets the tone for his new project - Ancestral Recall - with this powerful statement. In his mission to unify cultural voices and tear down the sonic and social constructs that separate based on race, class, and culture, Adjuah asserts music has historically been disseminated to people with harmony and melody prioritized over rhythm. The value distinction leads to harmful hierarchal sentiments and perpetuates the view that cultures who prioritize harmony and melody are more nuanced and sophisticated than those who prioritize rhythm. It is an inaccurate portrayal.

Ancestral Recall looks to excavate and update hidden histories in sound by displaying a sonic tapestry that illuminates the har-melodic movements found within rhythm, rendering previous contexts baseless, Adjuah explains: "In its inception, Ancestral Recall was built as a map to de-colonialize sound; to challenge previously held misconceptions about some cultures of music; to codify a new folkloric tradition and begin the work of creating a national set of rhythms; rhythms rooted in the synergy between West African, First Nation, African Diaspora/Caribbean rhythms and their marriage to rhythmic templates found in trap music, alt-rock, and other modern forms. It is time we created a sound that dispels singular narratives of entire peoples and looks to finally represent the wealth of narratives found throughout the American experience. One that shows that all forms of expression in sound are valid, as all people are." The goal is to connect people in one understanding rather than dividing them by definition.

The music of Ancestral Recall focuses the mind. As the ear adjusts to the shifting tapestries of rhythm, Adjuah stands firm in the mix, heralding the histories of rhythm and song. Walking hand-in-hand with listeners through his and their musical histories, clearing the way for a new reading of what all musical futures can become. Ancestral Recall is an album that might easily be misunderstood in its own time, but will certainly be seen as a moment in history that marked a momentous shift in musical and perhaps social understanding.
