Def 3 has spent the past 2.5 years sharpening up his skills on stage and in the studio touring extensively with Vancouver's Sweatshop Union throughout Canada and the U.S He is currently promoting his latest EP entitled "Amnesia". The EP features Moka Only, Josh Martinez, Tonye Aganabe and Ra Focus. His newest album with Saskatoon native super producer Factor is entitled “WILDLIF3” and is set to be released Summer 2014 on URBNET Records. Expect to hear a lot more from Def3 in the next few years as he is just getting started.

On Ultraviolet, Sadistik closes his eyes tight and reaches out towards the peripheries of perception through introspection and psychedelic escapism, transcribing the vivid images crawling on the dark purple walls of his Seattle studio. The day after he finished recording 2013's critically acclaimed Flowers For My Father, Sadistik (née Cody Foster) began writing the new record with a head full of acid, left field 60s & 70s cinema and palpable frustration with the world around him.
Falling somewhere on the spectrum between the confessionals of Atmosphere and dark heart of Cage, and inspired by the delivery and ethos of the legendary Eyedea, Seattle-based emcee Sadistik has been a force on the indie scene for the better part of a decade, opening for artists such as Lupe Fiasco and collaborating with the likes of Sage Francis, Astronautalis and Ceschi. He began Ultraviolet as an exercise in creativity, pushing himself to never take a day off and make the best album of his career for the second year in a row.
With production from SXMPLELIFE, Eric G, Maulskull and Kid Called Computer and guest shots from Eyedea, Lotte Kestner, Tech N9ne, Sticky Fingaz and Nacho Picasso, Ultraviolet peels back the layers behind Foster's synesthesia and reveals the colorful terrain just out of reach in the daytime when "the skies cry 365". He details a shifting Pacific Northwest cloud cover while referencing everyone from Orwell to Burroughs and examining the self in the era of surveillance and diminishing returns.
"Cult Leader" begins the album with an ominous banger emblematic of Sadistik's finest, most nuanced writing. "1984" channels André 3000 in its opening bars before Sadistik abstractedly explores the omnipresence of big brother. "Cubic Zirconia" features interludes from Italian film icon Asia Argento and an urgent, melodic third verse harmonized with the vocals of Lotte Kestner. Eyedea delivers an eerily prophetic verse on "Chemical Burns" that reminds listeners just what a masterful lyricist and narrator of the human condition he was. Sadistik adopts a deft delivery on the track to complement that of his lost friend whose torch he proudly carries on through every album.
Ultraviolet is Sadistik's unabashed nosedive into the subconscious mind, a three dimensional portrait painted in hues of psychosis and psychedelia. Drawing on his background in clinical psychology and cinematic predilections, he creates a richly layered world of his own and offers the listener a passing glimpse through the keyhole.

Modern Vintage is the new collaboration album from veteran emcee John Robinson (aka Lil Sci of world renown Hip-Hop group Scienz Of Life) and prolific drummer, composer, producer and band-leader Pat Van Dyke (aka PVD). John Robinson and PVD originally met at a show in 2008 and since then their chemistry has grown organically and has developed into the duo performing many formal shows together at venues like SOB's, Blue Note NYC, LPR and others around the NY-NJ Tristate area.

Modern Vintage spells out the approach in which this album was made from front to back: The music was composed with a combination of modern technology software mixed with vintage synths and outboard gear, all blended seamlessly with live instrumentation being the foundation. The lyrics and concepts were all spontaneously crafted in the studio, session by session, by letting the soundscapes speak to the lyricist similar to how vintage recordings of the 60's & 70's were created.

"I took a much more structured songwriting approach to the lyrics on this album; my goal from the beginning of making this record was to take advantage of the fact that I am working with PVD- a composer/musician and not just a beat maker/producer, which definitely makes this record different from my other releases. This one is for all the true music lovers worldwide" says John Robinson.

PVD states "making this record was a dream come true. From the very first session, we set out to craft quality songs that capture a cohesive vibe and feel good. In many cases, JR was writing to merely a sketch of what actually ended up on the record. It felt great to work with an artist who trusted me enough to lend his talents to the music not knowing where I would take it sonically. Live drums, keys, guitars, horns, and synths give this record a distinctly human feel that is present in all of my favorite records, old and new. A modern-day true Hip-Hop record, grounded firmly in the traditions of jazz, funk, and soul music."

José James is one of the most fascinating singers to appear in popular music over the last decade. On five previous recordings he's tackled jazz standards, hip-hop, neo-soul, funk, and even Moroccan gnawa. He claims that While You Were Sleeping is a synthesis of everything he loves about music citing Nirvana, Frank Ocean, Radiohead, and Junip in his list. He shifts directions yet again here, this time bringing his take on rock and pop into his musical arsenal. New guitarist Brad Allen Williams adds immeasurably to this ambition, joining a veteran band that includes keyboardist Kris Bowers, bassist/vocalist Solomon Dorsey, and drummer Richard Spaven. "Angel" is just one tune where Williams openly references the Jimi Hendrix of Band of Gypsys and Cry of Love. On "Angel," the band weaves fluid, silvery, wah-wah guitar distortion, jazzy Rhodes piano, dropped funky bass, and rolling, shuffling snares and breaks under his dark, sensual baritone. The title track (which briefly quotes from Neil Young's "Heart of Gold") weds folky psych pop to cosmic soul with a killer lead guitar break. The quiet drama in James' voice exudes elegance and earthiness. "Anywhere U Go" employs an aggressive bassline, shimmering Rhodes, and skittering, propulsive breaks against a guitar vamp that makes use of Nirvana's clipped melodic aesthetic. The spiritually resonant "4 Noble Truths" is introduced by strummed acoustic guitar in a minor key and a cracking snare. They are fleshed out provocatively by an expressionistic string quartet and a spiraling B-3. Becca Stevens makes one of her duet appearances on her haunting original "Dragon." Its Eastern-tinged slow groove is adorned by spacious guitar effects and elliptical keyboards atop a hushed rhythm section. Soul informs everything here. Check the stretched Madlib meets Flying Lotus beats in the sexy, tender "U R the 1." The minor-key melody in "XX" is one of James' better belly-to-belly love jams. His steamy croon is elevated by his lyrics, which are as poetically cognizant as they are carnally aware. The contrasting elements of pointillist rock guitars and warm indie electronica bump against the interlocking rhythm section. Al Green's "Simply Beautiful," features guest trumpeter and labelmate Takuya Kuroda delivering a fine solo. It's no ordinary cover. James recombines jazz, soul, and blues in a compelling arrangement that frames his trademark phrasing with tender yet sultry delivery. It underscores how provocative While You Were Sleeping is. With James' voice and nearly iconic harmonic sensibility as a guide, these genres flow into, rub against, and ultimately redefine one another. His creative reach, at least at this juncture appears to be boundless .

История такая. Осенью прошлого года RA Scion выпустил альбом "The Sickle & The Sword" (Серп и меч), весь продакшн к которому выполнил Rodney Hazard. Впоследствии кто-то из тех, кто успел послушать этот альбом назвали его лучшей работой рэппера со времен "Tobacco Road" (Common Market), ну а ваш покорный слуга по итогам года отдал предпочтение первому в 2013-м альбому RA, в основном потому что продакшн "Adding to the Extra" от Todd Sykes приглянулся мне куда больше, чем вяловатая инди-поп-электроника от Hazard'а. Спустя какое-то непродолжительное время Rodney Hazard и его менеджер(ы) заставили RA прекратить продажу "The Sickle & The Sword", видимо рассчитывая на какие-то коммерческие перспективы. Райан поворчал, в отчаянии даже пытался распространять альбом бесплатно, но в итоге к настоящему моменту от "The Sickle & The Sword" практически не осталось следов в сети в его первоначальном виде (ну с MKD он конечно никуда не делся). Но RA Scion нашёл нового продюсера для своих рифм, коим стал его земляк электронщик Vox Mod, и выпустил альбом ещё раз, с новым саркастическим названием "Sharper Tool; Bigger Weapon" (Острее инструмент, больше оружие), каждый из треков был также переименован. Таким образом, мы получаем фактически ещё один альбом RA, пусть и с не совсем новой лирикой, новый клип ("Venus in Transit" вышел на днях) и шлем Rodney Hazard'а куда подальше с его музыкой и базарным подходом.

Description:

Returning to the scene of a rhyme, Soul Movement 2 is the sequel to Slakah The Beatchild's critically acclaimed 2010 debut.
"For the original Soul Movement album, the whole purpose was to make music that I love, with no boundaries and no restrictions. And the music that I love, I mean REALLY love, is soul and hip hop." Says Slakah aka Byram Joseph (the name he wrote in felt tip on his first ever vinyl purchase, Chubby Checker & the Fatboy's The Twist) who released his debut, also on BBE Records, when his profile as a hitmaking producer was already in its ascendancy. Arriving hot on the heels of a 2009 Juno Award (think Canadian Grammy's) via Divine Brown's global hit Sunglasses, Soul Movement Vol. 1 chimed like a harmonic siren outta Hogtown. With both the r&b and hip hop genres on their knees in 2010, established black music acts, in an effort to get heard above the herd, had reverted to sixties duplication or 808's and heartbreaks. Soul Movement, against this background music, was the art & beats that contemporary r&b had abandoned.
"The original was collaboration of like-minded people who were doing the same thing and I wanted them to be there with me, as part of that movement, but with number 2 I eased that back a little - I'm looking forward to setting out and touring this album on my own."
A lá Quincy Jones, a fellow Performing Producer, Slakah's debut album was choc full of features and collaborations; with a whole host of T.Dot locals including superstar rap king Drake. Indeed Soul Movement 2 still benefits from additional expert talent; however the list – including Glenn Lewis, Ayah, Spek Won & Tanika Charles this time – has become more select. This time the movement Slakah needed was already on his shoulders. From the first cut and buzz single - the largely instrumental, mod funk bitches-brew of Cut A Rug (Byram's Groove) – Slakah's virtuosity and expertise is evident. "I'm not sure where the influences for Cut A Rug came from." He wonders, though he has no such trouble with Where's Yesterday, a lament on the dearth of quality new songs blaring outta North American radio stations. Says Slakah: "Commercial broadcasting forces us to listen to things we don't always want to but it's really developing music in a weird way. So I let that out in song – but I wanted to shout a few my heroes at the same time."
The spirit of two of those, J. Dilla & D'Angelo, can be heard channelled on the brilliant Us Theory, a song Slakah counts as one of the most personal on the album: "When I record the music I sing nonsensicals over it to begin with, just melodies, but the word "always" just kept coming back. It paved the way. The groove, whilst it was recorded on acoustic drums, has that push/pull unquantized feel of a Dilla or D'Angelo track."
It's not his girlfriend's pick though. Intriguingly, that would be the cool jazz thing titled Miscommunication a song originated by rapper Spek Won. "I get the best feedback from my girl," Says Slakah. "Because she's not your typical hip hop or soulhead, and I like getting viewpoints from people whose taste in music differs to my own – it means a song can translate across genres."
Despite the title there's no lingering issue between them, especially after Slakah let his girlfriend get a few right hand shots in when she played the duck (yes Duck!) in the recent video teaser he directed promoting this new set. There are songs for the lovers too you see, and you can hear how The Beatchild's vocal chops have developed since his last EP Something Beautiful on the sultry Adventure For Two. "Basically, I was feeling real frisky when I wrote that song, and sometimes - not necessarily sexually - you gotta do crazy, scary things together. I'm the adventurous one; I'll walk towards the explosions when everyone's running away. I can be heard asking 'wow, what's blowing up?'"
Blowing up? Could be the collaboration with major label star Glenn Lewis or the cut with newbie Tanika Charles, who appears on the short sojourn to Slakadeliqa (a Slakah side project) via the cool sixties soul stomp Love Fool. In Tanika, Slakah has discovered a gem of a voice, one of those tortured early classic soul vocalists who sound like they're man has been sleeping around with Barbara Mason (From His Woman To You). Slakah The Beatchild's T. Dot Soul Movement continues to march on ...

One famous Oscar Wilde aphorism claimed: "if you want to tell people the truth, make them laugh, otherwise, they'll kill you." Open Mike Eagle lacks the capacity to tell anything but the truth. In a nation that prizes self-aggrandizing buffoons and artful liars, morbid humor might be the sanest response-a tourniquet to stop the toxicity from spreading.
If this sounds heavy, it's probably because it is. Dark Comedy, the Mello Music debut from the critically revered Los Angeles rapper, is mostly about the failure of Karl Marx's Proletariat Revolution. Yet its brilliance stems less from the novelty of its ideas than from the ingenuity of its wordplay, its caustic whimsy, and infectious melodies.
Opening track "Dark Comedy Morning Show" operates as a shorthand manifesto. For those who haven't heard, Eagle's bad at sarcasm, so he works in absurdity (when trying not to wish death on the upper class). The airing of grievances includes racial stereotypes, inner-city warfare and Facebook logging all of his favorite sandwiches. It's Slug's "Modern Man's Hustle" if the Atmosophere frontman had been haunted by James Baldwin's ghost instead of heavily tattooed exes.
Lead single "Qualifiers" finds Eagle subverting the notions of traditional rap braggadocio and lyrical terrain. His revolution isn't just some abstract political ideals, but at the crux of his approach to art. This is intended to dump Coconut Water and whiskey on the unsuspecting heads of those with false ideas of authenticity or what rap should be.
Lest you mistake him for a meditating yoga-panted rapper, the rapper raised on the Southside of Chicago, wields wordplay as sharp and weird as any of his peers. He proclaims himself "the King of all rappers who don't condone date rape." Molotov Cocktails are helpfully tossed from fellow conspirators Kool AD and comedian, Hannibal Burress.
Former hockey star Luc Robataille is rhymed with the Kobra Kai Dojo from Karate Kid. In the same breath, Eagle cracks about being too old to die. It's absurdity in the sense that Joseph Heller deployed it in Catch 22. He will live forever or die in the attempt.
If you're just tuning into Eagle's stellar career on album number four, the LA Weekly anointed him last year as the hottest thing in indie rap. Pitchfork called him a "whiz with matching easy-going hooks to intimate personal reflection." But Dark Comedy could be the best thing he's ever done-a record that captures the perennial struggle between art and commerce, the last half-century of widening class rift, and the need to be funny or die.

There are few musicians – let alone beat–makers - in the world whose output in its raw form provides his listener with a full on musical experience before anything is added. Madlib is such a talent. Hip hop is his canvas, but he creates the most wondrous things with it. Before a microphone is switched on, before a rhyme even uttered, a Madlib beat stands alone as a complete thing.

Since the issue of the collaborative album with rapper Freddie Gibbs - Piñata, already being hailed as contender for rap album of the year - we've been asked countless times to issue the beats Madlib created for the project as instrumentals. And we've conceded. Piñata put Gibbs in the spotlight, one that a growing audience is finally acknowledging that he deserves. On Piñata Beats, though, it's Madlib, quietly spinning on the center stage. Through seventeen cuts of arcane film snippets, dusted funk and soul, psych and prog rock musical diversions, Madlib proves to live up to what Gibbs once said of him: "Madlib quite simply, is music."

Veteran Demigodz frontman and Army of the Pharaohs core member, Apathy, releases his 4th official full length solo effort. "Connecticut Casual" is an album that reveals a hidden side of New England, unfamiliar to most. From the opulent lifestyle of the Kennedy family, to the economically destitute neighborhoods of Connecticut, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. Mansions and projects. Tennis courts and bodegas. Summers spent on the shores of the Atlantic. Mysterious meetings in Masonic lodges. Homicides that go unsolved due to inadequate law enforcement budgets in poor areas, to literally getting away with murder by being well connected to East Coast royalty. The album is full of conceptual songs that range from underwater nautical tales, Freemasonry, Jack Ruby conspiracies and "Beefin' Over Bitches". Songs like "Curse Of The Kennedys" & "Martha Moxley" analytically highlight the darker side of America's royal family. "The Grass Ain't Greener" & "Money Makes The World Go Round", address the battle for our souls, against the almighty dollar bill. Production is handled mostly by Apathy with the addition of Da Beatminerz, The Doppelgangaz, Teddy Roxpin & Smoke The World. Original cover art by Chris B. Murray.

Description:

Nothing New is a posthumous album of vocal & piano recordings by Gil Scott-Heron to be released by XL Recordings on April 19th, 2014 in conjunction with Record Store Day. The album consists of new, stripped-down versions of a selection of older Scott-Heron songs stretching from 1971's "Pieces of a Man" to 1994's "The Other Side". It was recorded with producer Richard Russell between 2005 and 2009, in the same sessions that led to 2011's I'm New Here.[1]
In the liner notes published on the official website, Russell describes the album as "carefully curated (and) an excellent introduction to his previous output", adding that "the album is utterly sparse and devoid of anything that is not completely necessary. All it contains is Gil's singing and piano playing."
