Mach-Hommy наконец-то появляется на MakKEYDay, в течении этого года меня не раз просили выложить его творения, и я бы рад, но "HBO (Haitian Body Odor)" до сих пор не существует в хорошем качестве в сети, а последовавшие за ним полурелизы показались не самыми подходящими для знакомства, хотя, наверняка, многие и без того уже слышали про этого рэппера из Нью Джерси (или откуда-то ещё).
Mach-Hommy как может эксплуатирует образ таинственного, скрытного гения-затворника, делающего музыку для посвященных, также продаёт свои альбомы на bandcamp за сотни долларов (и их покупают) и развивает тематику сознательного гангста-рэпа. Возможно, на этой почве и возникла его связь с Griselda Records.
"HBO" - первый альбом Mach-Hommy, в прошлом году он продавал его через свой Instagram (!), тираж неспроста составил 187 копий, а теперь альбом можно слушать на Soundcloud. Ну а пока предлагаю оценить другую вещь, кое-что из bandcamp запасов рэппера, вот так совпадение, цена всего $187 за 12 треков.

Working with a close circle of producers to help realise her musical vision - including Kwes Darko, Sensible J and Alejandro ‘JJ’ Abapo - spanning spiritually-minded gospel and chants to neo-soul and hip-hop, it’s intertwined with a clearly-defined, no-holds-barred political outlook, and speaks a message of healing after her own experiences of hurt and pain.
Born in Zambia, raised in Botswana, her upbringing continues to bear an influence on her music. Moving to Australia four years ago, the connections she made there have propelled her to where she now stands. Living in Sydney when she first arrived, it was the shock of losing a close friend which prompted her to take the leap to try to become an artist. Going to the city’s weekly Jazz Hip-Hop Freestyle sessions for the first time, she went onstage to join the band and continued to go there each week, building up a network of likeminded music heads.
"Birds And The BEE9" arrives after a mixtape and series of EPs and singles which have attracted an increasing swell of support in Australia and beyond. Meeting through that freestyle night, it was with producer Dave Rodriguez (Godriguez) that she made 2015’s “The Great Mixtape”. She linked up with Godriguez again for the 'Blue Boss' single, followed by 2016’s "Heroes Act 2" which she worked on with Estelle and Rahki as part of a project with Red Bull Sound Select.
Expanding the scope of her collaborators for this release also meant honing her idea of what she wants to create. “I’ve only been doing this for two years professionally,” she says. "It was important for me as things continued to grow to take a little time to step back from everything and say, ‘This is what I want to do with my music.’ Music is the way I express myself, the way I reflect on life, reflect on the things that I’ve experienced."
A trio of different producers have helped her realise her vision for ‘BBEE9'. First up, there’s Kwes Darko who’s put out his own critically-lauded LPs for Black Acre and R&S. There’s Justin Smith (aka Sensible J), who is the producer and drummer for Melbourne’s much-touted REMI. And finally, there’s Alejandro ‘JJ' Abapo (aka Silentjay), another Melbourne-based producer who’s put out in-demand EPs for Rhythm Section and been in the band for Australian trailblazers Hiatus Kaiyote.
This new mixtape showcases the qualities which were already evident in those first releases. Boasting an unhurried, assured delivery, it’s the perfect foil for a self-aware, spiritually minded perspective. In 'Can I Get A Key', for instance, she shines as both a singer and MC while bemoaning the gatekeepers who maintain the rarefied, exclusive nature of the art world. Set against a backdrop of rumbling sub-bass, she sings a defiant chorus – in harmony with an earworm-like, softly-played sax refrain – before diving into ridiculous, tongue-twisting lyricism set down with her customary offhand delivery.
'Black Girl Magik' sees her reflect on the contribution and strength of black women, often unappreciated and overlooked, the track serves as a celebration of black womanhood. Against a loosely-built, pared-back beat, pairing steady drums with gently-played melodies, she flips from references to Yoruba to making puns on the language of spiritual consciousness: “Yemaya told me in a dream I was conscious / No I was not woke I was live in a concert.”
Taking in influences from disparate different corners, it’s an attitude that reflects her worldly perspective. Having lived in both Sydney and Melbourne in Australia, she’s also spent time studying in both San Francisco and LA. As such, it’s no surprise to hear the mixture of sounds that filter through the record. Be it the undercurrents of gospel and neo-soul which accompany reflections on her identity in 'Bye River', or the spiritually-minded chants and claps of ‘Healing', it’s an album that makes those sorts of connections seem effortless.

В прошлом году я слушал короткий релиз этого англичанина "616god" на bandcamp, после недолгих сомнений не стал выкладывать его на сайт. Музыка особых эмоций не вызвала, да и связь Milkavelli с субкультурами, которые я бы не хотел рекламировать, заставили быстро и без сожаления оставить его в покое.
В этом году он вернулся с более серьёзными аргументами в виде первого сольного LP, который заставил взглянуть на современный британский хип-хоп с нового ракурса при всём при том, что хранит в себе всю его атрибутику. "Cult Member" потому что Milkavelli участник группы Cult Mountain, куда помимо него входят Lee Scott и Trellion, кроме того, он участник группы Piff Gang. Это атмосферный альбом с талантливым продашном (не без участия битмейкеров Blah) и Milkavelli, который при всей своей странности и ненормальности держит внимание.

"I started listening to Hip Hop in the 90’s. My interest grew slowly until it became a collection of records, CDs and taped VHS. This then evolved into experiments, sampling and chopping WAVs on free versions of WaveLab. In 2003 this became an MPC 2000XL. I was living in Los Angeles at the time so I had started going to shows and hanging out with people who shared similar interests. We all began to gather and learn together. Records became beats which became freestyle sessions, songs, laughter and much coughing. After several years I returned to Tokyo and it’s been 10 years since I have been back.
I still make beats the same way. Going off of feeling I would get when I hear a record. The selection of sounds has changed slightly in accordance with my current environment. Still mostly sample-based but adding new and old tools have become part of my process. Just continuing to create music my body and spirit needs to feel good."

"Radio Silence" - 8-й альбом Talib Kweli, который в последнее время занят развитием своего лэйбла Javotti Media, что, очевидно, заставляет его не забывать и про сольную карьеру. В этом году году Talib уже выпустил мини-альбом "The Seven", коллабо со Styles P, и подошёл к двухлетней отметке без сольных релизов, которую он давно не пересекал - это здорово.
Javotti живёт за счёт релизов самого Kweli, молодёжь не блещет, и всё это похоже на ситуацию с хорошо начинавшим, но потухшим Blacksmith, первым детищем рэппера. В сольном творчестве ветерана тоже кризис, который начался после "Gutter Rainbows" (2011). Это кризис внимания, вряд ли Talib стал хуже делать то, что он умеет, но хип-хоп уже не тот, что даже 10 лет назад, когда "Eardrum" выходил. Тут он снова пытается найти баланс между независимым и коммерческим подходом, поэтому Waka Flocka Flame и Myka 9 на одном альбоме, что априори вызывает некоторые сомнения.

Greydon Square возвращается с очередным альбомом. За развитием карьеры рэппера из Комптона мы следим практически с самого начала MakKEYDay, так что многие уже знают, что этот парень не особо жалует религию, но любит науку и поэтому называет свои альбомы научными терминами, порой даже обыгрывая в них название калифорнийского города, к которому они, конечно, никакого отношения не имеют. Кстати Комптоновское рассеяние - это другое название Эффект Комптона ("The Compton Effect" - так назывался LP Greydon'а 2007 года), но альбом всё же новый. Первый релиз после трилогии "Omniverse" (2010-2015).
Grey довольно успешно доносит свои идеи до слушателя, аудитория его bandcamp'а растёт с каждым релизом. Кстати, интересно сравнить его лирику с milo, если у того эмоции и вдохновение, то у этого скорее холодный расчёт, при том, что оба козыряют начитанностью и широким кругозором.

Второй альбом базирующегося в Осло рэппера Ivan Ave, в прошлом году выпустившего сольный дебют также на Jakarta Records. Если "Helping Hands" был полностью спродюсирован MNDSGN, то на "Every Eye" ждёт куда более разнообразный инструментал. В подмогу ко всё тому же MNDSGN Stones Throw делегировали сюда Dâm- Funk и DJ Harrison, гаитянин Kaytranada - ещё один гость с Запада, самый неожиданный из всех в силу своей танцевальности. А вот появление норвежца Fredfades куда более закономерно, в дуэте сним Ivan Ave добился немалых успехов.
Любителям ровного спокойного звука не следует это пропускать.

In 2017, we’ve only caught a few glimpses of what Ivan has been working on, namely the soulful Kaytranada x Kiefer produced loosie “Also” and the jazzy MNDSGN produced single “Young Eye”. As it turns out, these two cuts are a good indication as to what the Oslo based artist has in store for us with his next LP release. On November 10h of this year, Ave presents his sophomore LP “Every Eye”.
“Every Eye”, with its symbiosis of different producers, musicians and vocal styles puts Ivan Ave in his own lane. Leaving behind the sample heavy sound he’s gained recognition with, Ivan embarks on his first musical journey free of chopped up jazz, soul and funk records. But it would be an understatement to say that “Every Eye” still has jazz, soul and funk for days. Enlisting musical homies like Fredfades, MNDSGN, DJ Harrison, Kiefer, Kaytranada and Dâm- Funk on the production side, Ivan carves out his path as an ever-growing MC and singer.
All-though “Every Eye” sometimes hovers in a state of weightlessness genre wise, there is no shortage of gravity in Ave’s lyrical universe. Ivan seems to have written this record as his own self help book, dealing with the mechanisms of the mind, the heart, and the world he sees (or doesn’t see).The title “Every Eye” refers to our various angles of view; the ones we choose and the ones we are assigned to.

While on this extensive initial international run between March and May, live recordings were made of songs from ‘The Iceberg’ and from his extensive catalog, and will be released as Oddisee’s first-ever live album November 10th, titled ‘Beneath The Surface’ (Mello Music Group).
Oddisee and his deeply funky, muscular band flex through highlights from ‘The Iceberg’ including the Go-go pocket of “NNGE,” the incensed “Like Really,” and his mission statement for the album, the plea for understanding that is “Things.” The album showcases an MC and his band charging through songs with an important message and having a blast on stage at the same time.
Non-‘The Iceberg’ tracks include “Lifting Shadows” and “Strength and Weakness” from his 2016 ‘Alwasta’ EP, “That’s Love” from ‘The Good Fight’ and “You Know Who You Are” from ‘People Hear What They See.’

First Word Records are very proud to present an EP by Manchester's finest Hip Hop and Soul exports, Children of Zeus. This is 'The Story So Far…'
Konny Kon & Tyler Daley met back in 2005, after both performing a show near Paris in their respective crews, Broke'N'£nglish and Body Roq. The duo met up back home in Manchester, spurred on initially by a mutual admiration of each others music, and produced their first track together, aptly entitled 'Coming Home To You'.
A few years later, Tyler approached Konny about producing a full EP together. These sessions included the creation of a track called 'Still Standing', which ultimately saw the light of day last Summer on First Word. Still a highlight in their live sets, the Lenzman rub won "Best Remix" at the 2016 Drum & Bass Awards. The original has become somewhat of a British Soul anthem since its release, with people that missed it first time round still clamouring for it on wax. So we've included it on this EP.
As they've grown within the family of Manchester's music scene, they've provided a tonic to the city's bass-orientated club scene, breathing Soul back into the city, whilst maintaining their heritage of Hip Hop swagger. As an MC, Konny takes no prisoners, whilst Tyler (a prolific MC in his own right) has gained a rep as one of the UK's strongest Soul voices. Both artists have been blessed with the talent of beat-making. A combined craftsmanship upon the boards and in the booth.
From building a grassroots following of fans, they've since travelled the globe, sharing stages with giants and catching the ear of peers far and wide, from Pete Rock to Zed Bias. As well as hosting their own monthly radio show on NTS, they've collaborated with numerous Hip Hop acts, both sides of the Atlantic, as well as Soul royalty in the form of Caron Wheeler and Drum'n'Bass legends, such as Goldie (Tyler featuring heavily across his latest album).
Children of Zeus have finally begun the process of crafting together their debut album. This EP is a compilation of the creations the duo have produced themselves over the past decade, put together to appease their loyal followers thus far, and as an introduction to those yet to discover their talents. A snapshot of what has been, and a mere taster of what's to come. It features brand new tracks such as 'Smoke With Me' and 'I Want You', the anthemic 'Crown' (featured on First Word's 'Two Syllables' compilation previously) and fan favourites such as 'No Sunshine Tomorrow' and 'Push On'. A collection of raw, gritty, Hip Hop Soul music.
The debut album will drop in 2018.
This collection signals the end of the first chapter. A prologue even.

Brass Menažeri живут в Америки, но остались верными музыкальным традициям народов Балканского полуострова, кое-кто посчитал, что такая экзотика может послужить хорошим фоном для рэпа, жалко, что не все это оценили. В 2011 году я слушал несколько песен Mr. Lif и Brass Menažeri, звучание действительно показалось интересным и необычным даже если сравнивать с живыми бандами. Bandcamp лучше всяких кикстартеров.

Brass Menažeri met Mr. Lif way back in December of 2010, when mad genius Devon Leger thought—unlike anyone else in the world—that Balkan brass would make a good backdrop for hip hop. So he invited us all to meet and collaborate in the Seattle Folk Festival. We sent a swath of largely fruitless emails, flew to Seattle, and had a single rehearsal in a puddly coffin factory, with a borrowed Crate bass guitar amp for Lif’s vocals. We didn’t get electrocuted, somehow, and thus we didn’t make use of the factory’s usual product. Instead we created a collaboration method based on live remixing the band, slicing and rearranging our repertoire on cue, muting and soloing sections of the band & looping sections willy nilly, like a DJ might if they held dictatorial control over ten people, instead of Ableton Live.
You weren’t there, but it was awesome.
We loved it & rocked it. We decided to make a record, raised money from friends & faithful strangers, recorded a lot of music, the band disbanded, some people loved and lost, others simply waited, we composed & recorded & edited & re-recorded (in three different countries) & cut & recut & recomposed (& decomposed a bit—happens to us all), and now only seven years later, you’re holding this thing in your I-wouldn’t-say-grubby-exactly hands, praise the laud.
We’re so eternally grateful to all those who believed in us and supported us throughout this long process; to all who donated to the project; to Waxsimile Records for putting us over the top; and to you for listening to the final result. We hope you enjoy this crazy fruit of our crazy labor & our crazy love. And while the world's winds whip up certain uncertainty, may we breathe deep & build Resilience together—our intertwined roots anchoring our supple-yet-shatterproof trunks, so that everyone's limbs might offer up their most beautiful particular fruit, to nourish us all, while we birth again the world.
